The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane and several neighbouring districts as relentless monsoon rain continued to batter the region for a fourth consecutive day, prompting authorities to urge residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
The warning comes amid a series of fatal rain-related incidents across Maharashtra, including the death of a motorcyclist in Thane after a coconut tree fell on him and a man who died after falling into an open manhole in Mumbai.
According to the IMD, more than 100 mm of rainfall was recorded in several parts of Mumbai over the past 24 hours, with weather officials warning that the intensity is expected to increase over the weekend.
The department has forecast extremely heavy rainfall between 200 mm and 250 mm in high-risk areas through July 7.
Heavy rain since Saturday morning has already caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas.
Data from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) rain gauges showed suburban areas received the highest rainfall. H-West Ward recorded 146.4 mm, followed by Bandra (Supari Tank Municipal School) with 143.4 mm, Bandra (Pali Municipal School) with 140.6 mm, G-South Ward Office with 140.2 mm, F-North Ward Office with 132 mm, Mankhurd Fire Station with 126.8 mm and Chembur's Collector Colony with 124.2 mm.
Neighbouring Thane city recorded 58 mm of rainfall between Friday morning and early Saturday, with intermittent heavy showers continuing.
The red alert remains in force for Mumbai and Thane on Saturday and Sunday. Palghar, Raigad and the ghat regions of Pune and Satara are also under similar warnings.
The BMC, Fire Brigade and Disaster Management Department have been placed on high alert.
Authorities have prohibited entry to beaches and coastal areas due to rough sea conditions and appealed to citizens to avoid waterlogged roads, low-lying areas and hilly regions. Residents have also been advised not to drive or walk through flooded streets and to secure loose objects outside their homes.
The weather warning comes asMaharashtra witnessedmultiple rain-related tragedies this week.
In Thane district, 35-year-old motorcyclist Rahul Ashok Patil died after a coconut tree collapsed onto his moving motorcycle in Rai village of Mira-Bhayandar during heavy rain on Wednesday evening.
Rahul, a resident of Murdhagaon and son of former Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Council Deputy Mayor Ashok Patil, was trapped beneath the fallen tree before local residents rescued him and rushed him to a nearby hospital. He remained in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit but succumbed to his injuries after battling for life for two days.
Earlier this week, an 11-year-old boy, Vihan Shrivastav, was killed and four others injured after a tree uprooted and crashed onto a school bus carrying 13 students on Road No. 11 in Mumbai's Chembur area.
On Thursday, another rain-related tragedy claimed the life of 55-year-old Aslam Esaf Shaikh, who fell into an open manhole on Khairani Road in Mumbai during heavy rainfall. He was taken to Rajawadi Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
The state administration has urged people to remain vigilant and contact emergency helplines in case of any rain-related incidents as heavy monsoon activity continues across the region.
