Liverpool are said to be ready to entertain serious transfer bids for their captain, Virgil van Dijk, after the Dutch defender seemingly lost his ‘untouchable’ standing at Anfield. This development follows a disappointing Premier League season that led to managerial changes, prompting the club’s hierarchy to prepare for a major squad revamp under new management.
Reports suggest that Van Dijk is no longer considered indispensable at Liverpool. According to TEAMtalk, the club’s stance on the 34-year-old centre-back has shifted following a frustrating campaign that saw their title challenge collapse and manager Arne Slot depart. Despite Van Dijk signing a contract extension in 2025, the club is now believed to regret those terms after failing to secure any trophies. With senior players Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson already moving on, Liverpool executives have informed new head coach Andoni Iraola that the captain is no longer off-limits in transfer discussions.
In the meantime, AC Milan have reportedly initiated formal enquiries through intermediaries to assess the possibility of signing the experienced Dutch international. Italian media claim that new Rossoneri boss Ruben Amorim sees Van Dijk as his top transfer target to strengthen the defence. While interest has also emerged from the Saudi Pro League, Major League Soccer, and several Turkish clubs, Liverpool are not pushing their captain out but are open to evaluating credible offers.
The potential exit of Van Dijk comes at a time when Liverpool’s defensive depth is already under strain. Ibrahima Konate has left the club, and Joe Gomez’s future remains uncertain with less than a year left on his current deal. Although Liverpool hold an option to re-sign Jarell Quansah, which becomes active in 2027, losing Van Dijk would necessitate an immediate and high-quality replacement during the transfer window.
New manager Andoni Iraola faces a significant challenge in pre-season as he takes charge of a transitioning squad. He must carefully assess his defensive resources before the transfer market closes, especially with Liverpool set to kick off their new Premier League campaign away at Newcastle United on August 23.
