Reports emerging on Saturday suggest that 40-year-old Luka Modric is leaning towards continuing his career with AC Milan for the 2026–27 season, despite the club’s failure to secure qualification for the upcoming UEFA Champions League campaign.

Modric is currently a free agent following the expiration of his one-year deal with Milan on June 30. The former Ballon d’Or winner had joined the Rossoneri on a one-season contract that included an option to extend for another year, an option which has since lapsed.

The Croatian midfielder’s future had been uncertain after Milan’s disappointing fifth-place finish at the end of the 2025–26 Serie A season. That outcome led to significant changes within the club’s hierarchy, including the departures of head coach Massimiliano Allegri, sporting director Igli Tare, technical director Geoffrey Moncada, and CEO Giorgio Furlani.

There had been speculation that Modric, along with several other prominent Milan players, might move on during the summer transfer window. Reports even linked him with a potential coaching or directorial role at Real Madrid, the club where he enjoyed his most successful years.

However, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the possibility of Modric staying at San Siro for another season is increasing. The veteran playmaker is said to have enjoyed his experience in Milan during the 2025–26 campaign, despite the team’s struggles towards the end of the season.

Modric’s decision is yet to be finalised, but Milan are reportedly eager to retain the services of the legendary midfielder. Another factor influencing his thinking is believed to be his daughter, who is thriving as part of Milan’s Under-13s team and enjoying life in the city.

The 40-year-old was seen celebrating after scoring during a Serie A match between Pisa SC and AC Milan at the Arena Garibaldi on February 13, 2026, a moment that reflected his continued passion for the game and his strong contribution to the Rossoneri.
