When Michail Antonio came off the bench for Jamaica in their Gold Cup match against Guatemala in June 2025, it marked an extraordinary chapter in his journey back to football.
Only six months earlier, Antonio had endured devastating injuries in a car crash that not only jeopardised his career but also posed a grave threat to his life.
The forward suffered a severe leg fracture that kept him hospitalised through most of December, with doctors initially estimating a recovery period of at least a year. Yet, the former West Ham United striker’s unyielding determination powered his remarkable return to the sport.
“I have no memory of it,” Antonio told FourFourTwo when asked about the incident. “I only know what I’ve been told – that I was found by a dog walker, and when the first responders arrived, they found me in the back of the car.”
“I was conscious, but one of my legs was a quarter smaller than the other because it had been completely shattered and was lifted up.”
“Thankfully, they took me to the Royal London Hospital, which specialises in emergency surgeries. One of the best surgeons operated on my leg, and that’s one of the key reasons I was able to play football again.”
Antonio added, “It doesn’t feel like I experienced the crash myself – I don’t remember any pain. Even though I was the one in the accident, it was really my family who lived through it. They were the ones who received the photos of the crash, who rushed to the hospital, who had to speak to the doctors to understand what had happened.”
“I don’t recall any of that. When I later saw the car and realised how bad it was, it hit me deeply.”
“It made me emotional and realise that, honestly, I might not have been here today.”
Antonio’s contract with West Ham came to an end in June 2025, but the club continued to support him throughout his rehabilitation. His incredible comeback was sealed when he came on as an 85th-minute substitute for Jamaica against Guatemala on June 17 – just half a year after the crash.
“It was incredible, I absolutely loved it,” Antonio said. “I even surprised myself with how quickly I managed to come back. I was fortunate to do it so soon because West Ham didn’t renew my contract, so I needed to show everyone that I could still perform on the pitch.”
“I’m truly thankful to God for giving me that chance.”
