Roma intensify chase for Mason Greenwood amid Atletico Madrid’s growing interest in Marseille star if Julian Alvarez departs

Roma are set to ramp up their efforts to sign Mason Greenwood in the coming days, as the Italian club look to strengthen their right wing before Atletico Madrid make a move. Reports from Italy suggest that the Spanish side could switch their focus to the Marseille forward if Julian Alvarez leaves his current club.

Giallorossi accelerate pursuit of priority target

Roma have named Greenwood as their main attacking target for the summer transfer window, with the club seeking to fully rebuild their right side of attack. The Serie A outfit had previously assessed several big-name options in May, including West Ham and Netherlands winger Crysencio Summerville, but ultimately stepped back due to escalating costs and heavy competition in the market.

According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, the management at Stadio Olimpico is now ready to make a determined push for the Marseille attacker, viewing the start of next week as a crucial period to strike a deal. Club officials in Rome believe that the next few days will be decisive in determining whether the high-value transfer can be completed or falls through.

Falling asking price sharpens Roma’s focus

Greenwood’s price tag has reportedly dropped below €50 million, with Marseille accepting that they are unlikely to retain the Englishman this summer. This reduction in valuation has further motivated Roma to move forward with a formal offer.

Fenerbahce are said to have proposed the most lucrative salary package so far, roughly €7 million per season, compared to Roma’s €5 million offer. However, the Turkish club have yet to take concrete steps on the transfer fee, leaving Roma with a potential opportunity to negotiate on more favourable terms.

Atletico loom as potential late threat

Roma’s main concern now lies with Atletico Madrid, who could quickly become serious contenders for Greenwood’s signature if their other transfer negotiations resolve soon. The Spanish side are currently waiting to see how two separate attacking situations unfold before making any new moves.

If Atletico manage to conclude deals involving either Julian Alvarez – considered the more complex case – or Alexander Sorloth, they could then turn their attention to Greenwood. The English forward’s reduced price and solid record in Ligue 1 make him an attractive option for the Spanish club should they need an immediate reinforcement.

Laporta confirms Alvarez pursuit

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has openly addressed the club’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez, confirming that the Argentine striker is keen on joining the Catalan side at Spotify Camp Nou. Laporta stated that Barcelona have already placed an official bid but emphasised that they will not allow Atletico to dictate terms in the negotiation.

“Let me make it clear that we continue to have great respect for Atletico,” Laporta said. “The situation arose because Julian expressed his wish to play for a major club; he didn’t specifically mention Barcelona. Some understood it as Barca, some didn’t. We didn’t push for this – it was the player’s choice. Alvarez has been on our radar since before he joined City. At that time, we couldn’t afford the transfer. We have now made a formal club-to-club offer.”

Laporta added, “Barcelona can handle any deal, but it must make sporting and financial sense. We will set the market’s pace. I’ve spoken with Atletico and clarified our intentions. Deco has already submitted the proposal. We know the player has long wanted to join Barca. This offer has been made with full respect to Atletico. They told us they weren’t planning to sell, as we didn’t have other options. Our proposal will stay on the table as long as we find it appropriate. We won’t be pressured. If Atletico agree, we’ll be delighted, but the offer isn’t open-ended.”
