Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has voiced strong criticism of the 2026 World Cup schedule after his team was pushed to the limit in a gruelling extra-time win over Cape Verde. The Albiceleste manager expressed frustration over the increasingly limited recovery periods as the tournament moves into its decisive stages.
Scaloni fumes over packed fixture list
The 3-2 extra-time triumph against Cape Verde has left Argentina with just three days to prepare for their round-of-16 encounter with Egypt on Tuesday. To compound the challenge, their Saturday morning training session had to be called off due to a severe storm that swept through Miami.
Following the narrow victory, Scaloni did not hide his discontent with the tournament’s scheduling. Although satisfied with the win, he was clearly annoyed at the lack of rest time his players have compared to earlier rounds, highlighting how the compressed schedule is taking a toll on his squad.
Addressing the media after the match, Scaloni questioned the reasoning behind the calendar: “What comes next? Now we have to rest. I don’t know how the World Cup is structured, but earlier we had six days, and now we have just three and a half. When you need the most rest, you get the least. It’s very difficult to understand; it should have been a gradual reduction. But anyway, that’s how it is.”
Survival against Cape Verde
The frustration over fixtures followed a draining contest that pushed the defending champions to their limits. On the night of his 100th match in charge, Scaloni admitted it would have been “crazy” for Argentina to lose after being forced into extra time by a determined Cape Verde side. The 3-2 result secured progress, but it left the squad physically exhausted.
Captain Lionel Messi also acknowledged the demanding nature of the match, joking about the physical challenges he faced. He remarked that while opponents “kick the crap” out of him during the game, they often ask for his shirt and a selfie once the whistle blows. The intensity of the encounter has left Scaloni concerned about the fitness of several key players.
Injury worries mounting for the Albiceleste
The short recovery window is particularly troublesome given the knocks sustained in Miami. Facundo Medina had to be substituted due to severe cramps, while midfield dynamo Enzo Fernandez also suffered similar issues late in the contest. In addition, Nico Gonzalez twisted his ankle during extra time, adding to Scaloni’s growing list of injury concerns.
Scaloni explained, “Enzo had a bit of cramping at the end, but he recovered. He finished the game with cramps again, but we had no more substitution windows available. We’re pleased with Facundo; he was exhausted because we used him a lot in attack, which isn’t his usual role. He’s been playing as a third centre-back, not going forward much. He ended up with cramps, but he’s fine, and thankfully we have Nico [Tagliafico] on the bench, who gives us the support we need and showed he’s in good shape.”
Egypt test awaits
Argentina now head to Atlanta to take on an Egypt team brimming with confidence after defeating Australia. The Pharaohs advanced following a penalty shootout, having meticulously studied video clips of spot-kick routines on a laptop before the decider. Their thorough preparation makes them a formidable opponent for an Argentine side that will be battling fatigue when they meet on Tuesday.
