Canada head coach Jesse Marsch caused a stir after his side’s 3-0 defeat to Morocco in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup, declaring, “I’d rather be us than them.”
Canada, who showed promise in the first half, were undone by a powerful strike from Azzedine Ounahi in the 55th minute. Ounahi added a second in the 82nd minute, before Soufiane Rahimi sealed Morocco’s victory with a stoppage-time goal. The result saw the African champions advance while Canada’s tournament ended in disappointment.
Speaking after the match, Marsch’s team had registered an Expected Goals (xG) tally of 0.86 with 10 attempts, compared to Morocco’s 0.78xG. Despite Canada’s greater attacking intent, Morocco were far more clinical in converting their chances.
After the final whistle, Marsch expressed both pride and frustration, saying, “What a privilege our fans have had to support a team like this — one that goes after the game, doesn’t sit back defensively, and shows they can compete at the highest level.”
He continued, “Of course, we need more experience in these situations, and we have to learn how to succeed. But what a great team this is.”
Marsch then made the comment that drew attention: “I’d rather be us than them. As good as Morocco are, I’d rather be us.” He added, “I’m really proud of our players. They gave everything. They’re hurting right now, but I couldn’t be prouder.”
The interview concluded with Marsch thanking Canadian supporters, responding warmly to the interviewer’s message of appreciation from the nation.
When the broadcast returned to the FOX Sports studio, former United States internationals Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan appeared puzzled by Marsch’s comments. The two ex-forwards expressed confusion over the coach’s “us versus them” remark, particularly in light of Canada’s limited attacking output — just three shots on target during the match.
Morocco, meanwhile, move on to face the winner of the France vs Paraguay fixture later tonight, as the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions aim for a second consecutive World Cup semi-final appearance.
