Iran has once again adopted a tough stance regarding the world’s most sensitive sea route, the Strait of Hormuz. Amidst efforts for peace talks with America, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi has warned Britain and France, saying that the Strait of Hormuz is not a platform for displaying military power. This statement comes at a time when the UK and France have planned a major multinational military mission to protect ships in the area.
Iran’s stern warning: ‘You will be responsible’
Iranian leader Kazem Gharibabadi expressed his displeasure on social media, saying that Iran is the guarantor of the security of this waterway and he keeps a close eye on any military activity taking place here. He said clearly, “The entire responsibility for the security of Hormuz rests only with the coastal countries. If external forces try to create a threat here, this audacity will have serious consequences. This is a serious warning from my side.”
‘Multinational Mission’ of UK and France
This anger of Iran has erupted after a joint statement issued by Britain and France. The UK and France have signed an agreement with Oman to ensure the safe passage of ships in Oman’s territorial waters. Both countries have said that the Strait of Hormuz is the lifeline of the global economy, hence ensuring freedom of navigation and compliance with international law is their priority. Britain and France have indicated they may also deploy a large international military mission to rescue the ships.
What is the real cause of stress?
The Strait of Hormuz is the route through which most of the Gulf countries’ oil exports pass through the world. What tension means here is a huge surge in crude oil prices around the world. On one hand, UK and France are increasing their presence here citing ‘freedom of navigation’, while Iran is challenging it considering it an attack on its sovereignty. At present, the increasing military activity in this area has increased the heartbeats of the entire world.
