Fernandez-Pardo’s Champions League Ambition Gives Manchester United an Upper Hand Over Newcastle

Manchester United appear to hold a clear advantage over Newcastle United in the pursuit of Lille winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo. The 21-year-old Belgian is reportedly eager to play in the UEFA Champions League — an opportunity only the Red Devils can presently provide.

According to The Peoples Person, Fernandez-Pardo’s determination to compete at the highest level of European football has become the key factor separating the two Premier League sides. Newcastle, who ended last season in 12th place, are unable to offer any form of European competition next term.

Fernandez-Pardo came to United’s attention following an impressive 2025–26 campaign for Lille, during which he netted eight goals and delivered five assists in Ligue 1. Across all competitions, he registered 15 goal contributions in about 40 appearances. Sky Sports first reported United’s interest last month, and the player is currently representing Belgium at the World Cup.

Lille have placed an estimated €60 million valuation on Fernandez-Pardo this summer, having already turned down mid-season offers of around €40 million during the January window. With Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona also showing interest, Manchester United face strong competition despite their Champions League advantage.

At present, Fernandez-Pardo remains a secondary target for United. Their main offensive focus this transfer window is Crysencio Summerville, who has significantly raised his profile following his performances for the Netherlands at the World Cup. The Peoples Person reported that Summerville “only” wishes to join United, despite attention from Tottenham Hotspur, seeing Old Trafford as his “ultimate destination, believing it’s the place where he can compete for the Champions League and the Premier League.” His proven track record in the Premier League makes him a comparatively safer signing.

Newcastle’s position has been further weakened after missing out on their top winger target, Víctor Munoz, who opted to join Liverpool. The Magpies are understood to have made enquiries with Lille about Fernandez-Pardo and are admirers of his talent, but the lack of Champions League football remains a fundamental obstacle they cannot easily overcome.

United’s move for Fernandez-Pardo will depend on player sales. The club is expected to finalise any new forward signing only after offloading at least one surplus attacker, with Joshua Zirkzee’s future among those currently under review at Carrington. The ongoing cultural transformation under manager Michael Carrick is seen as an appealing factor for a young prospect like Fernandez-Pardo, but both financial and squad considerations will need to align before United can make an official offer.
