Gavi, the young Barcelona and Spain midfielder, has spoken out in defence of Cristiano Ronaldo, arguing that those who criticise the Portuguese star are doing so without truly understanding his impact. As Spain get ready for a high-stakes World Cup encounter against Portugal, Gavi believes that despite his age, Ronaldo remains a decisive force capable of changing any match.

Challenging the Ronaldo criticism

In the build-up to Spain’s knockout stage clash with Portugal, much of the media attention has revolved around Ronaldo, now 41 years old. While some have suggested that his inclusion might disrupt Portugal’s fluid attacking rhythm, Gavi strongly disagrees with that notion.

In an interview with Mundo Deportivo at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, the Barcelona midfielder dismissed the negative talk surrounding the Al-Nassr striker. “I always hear those comments, but they usually come from people who aren’t part of his team, from fans. Those who share the dressing room with him have immense respect for him. Obviously, Cristiano is one of the greatest footballers in history, and he can make the difference at any moment,” Gavi stated firmly.

Ready for a tactical showdown

The meeting between these two Iberian heavyweights is being touted as one of the standout fixtures of the World Cup so far. Known for his energetic and combative style, Gavi understands that Spain’s chances of reaching the quarter-finals will depend heavily on controlling the midfield battle under the guidance of coach Luis de la Fuente.

“Yes, it’s clear that they are the toughest opponent we’ve faced so far. They’re an exceptional national team with fantastic players. I hope we stay focused on our plan, follow the coach’s strategy, and fight together to win this tie. They possess a strong midfield, but we also have excellent players. Our biggest strength is the depth of our squad, with so many quality footballers,” Gavi explained.

Addressing criticism of his own style

Ronaldo isn’t the only player under scrutiny in this tournament. Gavi himself has often divided opinion due to his intense playing style and physical approach. Nevertheless, the 21-year-old refuses to tone down his aggression on the pitch, describing his competitiveness as a defining part of his game.

“Yes, maybe a lot of people are waiting for me because I’m a player who goes into tackles hard, and perhaps not everyone likes that kind of footballer. I see myself as a complete player, with many aspects to my game. My biggest strengths are my competitiveness and intensity on the pitch. I’ll never change that. I know there will always be people waiting to criticise,” Gavi remarked.

Focused on the team’s mission

After coming off the bench in Spain’s recent win over Austria, Gavi is eager to contribute however the coach sees fit as the team chases their second World Cup title. He believes this Spanish squad has greater unity and balance than in past tournaments, which could be the key to success.

“I’ve said it many times—I’m here to help the team in any way I can,” Gavi added. “I know the coach trusts me, and he always has. As I tell him, I’m ready whenever he needs me. This is the World Cup, and it’s won by teams that stay united through good and bad moments. We have a deep squad, and at any given moment, any player can step in to make a difference.”
