Christian Lundgaard secured his first pole position since 2024 and will lead the grid at Mid-Ohio on Sunday, aiming for his third road course victory of the season.
With speculation linking IndyCar veteran Scott Dixon and reigning Indianapolis 500 champion Felix Rosenqvist to potential McLaren seats, Lundgaard’s position has become a topic of interest. The Danish driver, however, is using his performance to reinforce his credentials.
“I think everyone already knows,” Lundgaard commented when asked if he was driving to secure his seat. “I think people recognise my ability, so there’s nothing more that needs to be said.”
Just two weeks ago at Road America, Lundgaard faced early trouble on the opening lap, dropping to the back of the field before staging a strong comeback to take his second win of the year. He now looks forward to a smoother path to victory this weekend.
“I prefer this,” Lundgaard told IndyCar on FOX. “It’s much more enjoyable. It’s been some time since last year in Portland, when we had the engine penalty. Chevy has done an outstanding job with us all season. We’ve got two wins so far, and we’re looking to keep that momentum going. It’s amazing to have a 1-2; now we just have to finish the job.”
Lundgaard’s most recent pole did not translate into a front-row start due to an engine penalty that dropped him six grid spots at Portland International Raceway two years ago. His last start from pole came at Toronto in 2023.
The Danish driver topped Saturday morning’s practice session before qualifying, which was delayed due to track conditions.
Lundgaard will share the front row with his McLaren teammate Pato O’Ward, marking the first all-McLaren front row since the 2025 points race at The Thermal Club, where O’Ward started from pole and Lundgaard from second.
Behind the McLaren duo, the grid will feature the former No. 12 Penske driver and current pilot of the Verizon-backed Chevrolet, as Will Power qualified third and David Malukas secured fourth.
Christian Rasmussen reached the Fast Six for the first time this season, qualifying fifth ahead of Rinus Veekay.
Lundgaard’s pole came after Alex Palou’s surprising exit in the second qualifying round. Palou had been on a five-race pole streak entering Mid-Ohio. With less than a tenth of a second separating the top ten in the Round of 12, Palou was one of several favorites – including Kyle Kirkwood – to be knocked out earlier than expected. Palou will start eighth, while Kirkwood lines up tenth.
