Jordan Henderson suffered an unexpected injury following England’s World Cup victory over Mexico.
England secured a quarter-final clash with Norway in the early hours of Monday after an exciting 3-2 triumph against Mexico in the round of 16.
Thomas Tuchel’s team made history at the Estadio Azteca, handing the tournament co-hosts just their third defeat in a warm evening battle in Mexico City.
Despite not featuring on the pitch, Henderson was among the talking points for the Three Lions. The Brentford midfielder received a yellow card as an unused substitute after getting involved in a confrontation while warming up near the touchline late in the game.
However, Henderson’s night took a worrying turn post-match when he tripped over an advertising hoarding while celebrating with his England teammates. The midfielder was given oxygen and stretchered off with what appeared to be a wrist injury, which could rule him out of the upcoming quarter-final and potentially the remainder of the tournament.
Match-winners Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane offered differing assessments of Henderson’s condition when speaking to BBC Sport. Bellingham referred to it as “a bit of bother”, while captain Kane commented, “Hendo just fell over there. I think he’s ok. Something to do with his arm.”
Following the match, England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed that Henderson, aged 36, had been taken to hospital in Mexico City to have his wrist examined after the freak accident. Rather than returning to Kansas City with the rest of the squad, he remained behind with a member of England’s medical staff for further evaluation.
Tuchel said, “Jordan injured his wrist; it just doesn’t fit with the evening that Jordan is not with us. I don’t know the procedure, the doctor told me he is in the hospital.”
Henderson has made just one appearance for England at this World Cup, coming on as a late substitute in their final group stage win over Panama.
As of now, England’s media team have not released an official update regarding Henderson’s condition. However, signs suggest that the experienced midfielder may not play any further part in England’s 2026 World Cup campaign.
