The Round of 16 clash between the United States and Belgium promises to be one of the most intriguing matchups of the 2026 World Cup. Few expected the Americans to progress this far, while Belgium’s recent tendency to falter in major tournaments had many doubting their chances.

The U.S. Men’s National Team have been impressive throughout the competition, comfortably winning three of their matches. Belgium, on the other hand, had to stage a dramatic comeback against a dominant Senegal in their Round of 32 encounter to secure their spot in the next round.

This fixture brings together a team that has exceeded expectations and another that has yet to live up to its potential. But who will be the referee overseeing this crucial encounter?

The USA vs Belgium match is scheduled for 1 a.m. BST on Tuesday morning at the Seattle Stadium. Taking charge of the contest will be Jordanian referee Adham Makhadmeh, who has already officiated three matches at the 2026 World Cup.

Makhadmeh previously refereed the England vs DR Congo match, where he declined to award a penalty after Harry Kane appeared to go down easily when the Three Lions were trailing 1-0. That decision drew attention for its composure and consistency under pressure.

He also officiated Belgium’s emphatic 5-1 victory over New Zealand in their final Group G fixture, a result that placed the Red Devils at the top of their group standings.

The 39-year-old referee has demonstrated a measured approach in this tournament, averaging just two yellow cards per game, without showing a single red card or awarding a penalty so far.

In comparison to his peers, Makhadmeh tends to be more restrained with his disciplinary actions. In the AFC Champions League Elite, where he has substantial experience, he averages 3.6 yellow cards per match. Over 58 games in that competition, he has shown nine red cards and awarded 13 penalties.

His record in World Cup qualifiers and the Arab Cup is consistent, maintaining an average of roughly three bookings per match, reflecting his steady and balanced officiating style.

The USA vs Belgium matchup will also feature two teams known for their disciplinary records. Both sides have seen players sent off during this World Cup campaign in North America. The United States will notably be without striker Folarin Balogun, who was dismissed earlier in the tournament and will therefore miss this vital Round of 16 tie.
