Manchester United could be set to miss out on another long-term midfield target as Newcastle United intensify their efforts to sign Johan Manzambi, according to David Ornstein.
Manzambi has been on Manchester United’s radar following a standout season with SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga, where the German club reached the Europa League final. Although Die Breisgauer suffered a 3-0 loss to Aston Villa, the 20-year-old midfielder was one of the few players from his side who looked comfortable at that level.
The Swiss international, known for his dynamic and energetic style of play, has drawn comparisons to former Manchester United star and World Cup winner Paul Pogba, as well as Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham — and it is easy to understand why.
Standing at 6 feet tall, Manzambi combines physical power and speed with exceptional technique. His ability to carry the ball ranks among the best in Europe, showcasing impressive dribbling and agility for a player of his size.
In the Bundesliga last season, he contributed 14 goals and assists, underlining his effectiveness in the attacking third. His scoring instincts have also been evident at the World Cup, where he has recorded three goals and two assists in five appearances. However, Switzerland will face Colombia in the Round of 16 at BC Place in Vancouver without him, as he has been ruled out due to injury — a significant setback for the Swiss side.
Manchester United’s interest in Manzambi has been strengthened by his World Cup performances, but the club will need to move swiftly as Newcastle United have also stepped up their pursuit.
According to Ornstein, Newcastle are preparing to open discussions with Freiburg this week to finalise a deal for the midfielder. The Magpies are currently regarded as the frontrunners for his signature, with the Geneva-born player reportedly open to joining them, although several top clubs are monitoring the situation.
The report notes that Manzambi is Newcastle’s “priority target”, particularly after the club lost Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur and with Joe Willock’s future uncertain as he enters the final year of his contract.
Earlier reports indicated that Manzambi had been a key topic of discussion at St James’ Park, while Manchester United have been long-term admirers of the young midfielder. His recent displays in North America appear to have boosted that interest even further.
After missing out on two major midfield targets — Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali — Manchester United are now exploring other options to strengthen Michael Carrick’s squad. Manzambi seems an ideal fit to add drive and attacking flair to a midfield that has lacked both at Old Trafford. Moreover, securing his signature would also be a significant coup over one of their Premier League rivals.
