Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana has sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during his team’s 4-1 victory over the United States in the World Cup Round of 16, delivering a significant setback for both the Red Devils and his club, Aston Villa.

The 24-year-old was substituted in the first half after suffering a knee injury following a collision with U.S. defender Antonee Robinson. Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia confirmed after the game that the injury is expected to end Onana’s tournament, while later medical assessments verified that he has indeed torn his ACL.

Even after losing one of their most important midfielders early in the match, Belgium produced a commanding performance to knock out the United States and secure a place in the quarterfinals against Spain. Charles De Ketelaere netted twice, with Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku also adding their names to the scoresheet in the emphatic win.

An ACL rupture generally keeps players out of action for several months, meaning Onana now faces a long period of recovery and rehabilitation while Belgium continue their World Cup journey without one of their most influential figures in midfield.
