Veteran England midfielder Jordan Henderson has spoken for the first time after sustaining a freak injury during the celebrations that followed England’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Mexico in the FIFA World Cup.
The 36-year-old, who tripped over advertising boards at the Estadio Azteca while celebrating with teammates, is believed to have broken his arm as he tried to cushion his fall.
Henderson, who had only played six minutes across England’s first five matches of the tournament, was stretchered off the pitch, administered oxygen, and taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
In his first public message since the incident, the former Liverpool captain expressed gratitude to supporters for their messages of concern. He also reaffirmed his commitment to the team as they prepare for Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final clash against Norway.
Posting on social media, Henderson wrote: “A night to remember, that’s for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be a part of this special team. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday.”
England head coach Thomas Tuchel now faces the remainder of the tournament without one of his most seasoned players, confirming that Henderson’s injury will rule him out of further participation in the World Cup.
Defender Marc Guehi, speaking about his teammate’s condition, said: “Hendo’s good. He’s in a better place than he was on Monday. It was obviously scary for him, his family and everyone else, but we’re just glad he’s on the road to a speedy recovery.”
Tuchel admitted that the incident had taken the shine off England’s celebrations following their dramatic win against Mexico. He confirmed that the midfielder’s injury was serious enough to end his tournament early.
The absence of Henderson is a major setback for England, given his leadership qualities and experience within the squad. Although his playing time has been limited, his influence in the dressing room has been viewed as invaluable throughout the campaign.
Attention now turns to England’s crucial quarter-final encounter with Norway, where Tuchel’s side will aim to secure a place in the semi-finals without their influential veteran midfielder.
