Chelsea winger Jesse Derry is on the brink of sealing a season-long loan move to Portuguese powerhouse Sporting CP, soon after committing to a new contract at Stamford Bridge. The promising teenager, who impressed during his breakthrough season in London, is now set to gain vital first-team experience in the Champions League while continuing his rapid development.

Derry signs fresh Chelsea contract before heading to Sporting

As per a report from BBC Sport, Derry is close to completing a temporary switch to Sporting for the upcoming campaign. The deal is expected to be a straightforward loan without any option to buy. This move follows Chelsea’s decision to reward the talented youngster with a new contract after his senior debut last season.

The English forward had drawn interest from several major European clubs, including Bayern Munich, but Chelsea acted swiftly to secure his long-term future. The club believes a loan spell in Portugal will offer him the consistent senior-level experience he needs, following the positive impression he made on the coaching staff during his first-team appearances.

Competition at Stamford Bridge prompts loan decision

While Derry prepares for his medical and imminent move to Sporting, Chelsea are finalising the signing of Geovany Quenda from the Portuguese side in a £40 million deal this summer. Quenda’s arrival will further strengthen Chelsea’s attacking department, which already features Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian, Jamie Gittens, and Alejandro Garnacho.

As a result, Chelsea have opted to send Derry out on loan to ensure he gains sufficient playing time. At the same time, the club has placed Garnacho on the transfer list for a permanent move, ruling out any loan exit for him. The Blues are keen to streamline their squad and are prioritising finding a buyer for Garnacho as they continue reshaping their attacking options.

From academy prospect to first-team breakthrough

Derry’s rise has been swift since joining Chelsea’s youth setup from Crystal Palace last summer. Having represented England at Under-17, Under-18, and Under-19 levels, he quickly established himself as one of the club’s top young prospects. The winger made three senior appearances last season, including his first Premier League start against Nottingham Forest.

Unfortunately, that debut was cut short before half-time following a head collision. He has since made a full recovery and was named on the bench as an unused substitute in Chelsea’s final match of the season against Sunderland, underlining that he remains part of the club’s long-term plans.

What lies ahead for Derry?

Derry will now head to Portugal to complete his medical and finalise the paperwork for his loan move to Sporting. Once the formalities are done, he will join his new teammates to prepare for a challenging campaign featuring Champions League fixtures. A successful spell abroad could pave the way for his return to London as a stronger contender for a regular starting role at Chelsea.
