Egypt FA condemns refereeing after Argentina defeat, demands answers following World Cup elimination

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has issued a fierce condemnation of the refereeing standards at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Egypt’s dramatic exit against Argentina. The governing body expressed its deep frustration over a series of controversial decisions that saw the Pharaohs lose a two-goal advantage in a 3-2 defeat.

EFA calls for accountability over VAR controversies

The EFA broke its silence after Egypt’s painful Round of 16 loss in the United States, where Enzo Fernandez struck a 92nd-minute winner for Argentina. Despite leading 2-0, the Pharaohs were eliminated amid growing claims of officiating inconsistencies and technical failures involving the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

In a strongly worded statement, the EFA declared: “The Egyptian Football Association cannot remain silent regarding the refereeing decisions witnessed during the match against Argentina as well as the failure to properly use the Video Assistant Referee system. Several key moments raised serious doubts and created profound questions about the consistency and fairness of decisions that directly impacted the game’s outcome.”

The statement also referred to widespread global concern over the officiating, adding: “Many football experts and analysts, both locally and internationally, have pointed out controversial and decisive refereeing incidents during the match. This highlights the need to uphold the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and transparency in match officiating, especially in a tournament of the magnitude and prestige of the FIFA World Cup 2026.”

Standing up for the Pharaohs’ rights

The EFA stressed that the treatment of the Egyptian national team during their stay in the United States could not be ignored. Officials believe that the players were deprived of fair competition, citing two major refereeing incidents as the focal points of their complaint. The first was a disallowed goal that could have shifted momentum, overturned after what analysts described as “an excessive VAR intervention.” The second was a foul by Alexis Mac Allister in the build-up to Enzo Fernandez’s winning goal, which went unpunished.

“Egyptian football has always upheld the principles of fair play, sporting integrity, and respect for the game. These values demand that all teams compete under equal conditions and receive equal treatment,” the EFA’s statement continued. “The events of this match have understandably caused deep frustration among our players, coaching staff, and supporters, who expected the highest standards of officiating on football’s biggest stage.”

The statement concluded with a pledge to the fans: “Defending the rights and interests of the Egyptian national team is not an issue that can be overlooked, minimised, or treated lightly. It is a duty we uphold with conviction and determination. Every player who wears the Egyptian colours, and every supporter who stands behind the team, deserves fairness, respect, and equal application of the laws of the game.”

Hossam Hassan criticises ‘injustice’ and refereeing bias towards Messi

The EFA’s statement came after a heated post-match press conference from head coach Hossam Hassan. The iconic former striker was outspoken in his criticism, suggesting that external influences may have played a role in ensuring Lionel Messi and the reigning champions stayed in the tournament.

“We were better than the world champions — better in every area — but the result was affected by internal factors on the pitch and external factors off it,” Hassan said. “Perhaps they wanted to keep the world champion in the competition. Perhaps they wanted Messi to continue. We did not see respect or fair play. A clear penalty for a foul on Mo Salah was ignored and not even reviewed by VAR, and our second goal was cancelled for an inexplicable reason.”

Hassan added, visibly emotional: “I would like to call it bad luck, but what happened was unfair — it was an injustice. The story of the tournament seemed more important than our performance tonight.”

Egypt’s historic journey comes to an end as Argentina advance

The defeat ended Egypt’s most successful World Cup campaign in history. The Pharaohs reached the Round of 16 for the first time ever, excluding the 1934 edition which had only 16 teams, marking their fourth appearance at the global showpiece. Meanwhile, Argentina continue their pursuit of back-to-back titles, advancing to the quarter-finals where they will face Switzerland, who booked their spot after defeating Colombia on penalties.
