Mason Greenwood’s stint in Ligue 1 appears to be drawing to a close, with a surprising move to the Turkish Super Lig gaining momentum. The English forward, who joined Marseille in 2024, is now at the centre of advanced negotiations that could see him make the switch to Istanbul to join Fenerbahce.
A major transfer move to Turkey
Fenerbahce are reportedly nearing a high-profile agreement for Greenwood, as Marseille progress significantly in discussions to offload the English attacker. As reported by RMC Sport, the two clubs have been in steady talks since the end of the 2024–25 campaign, when speculation about Greenwood’s future began to intensify.
Although Atletico Madrid made an effort to attract the former Manchester United star to Spain with a strong sporting proposition, the lucrative financial offer from Turkey ultimately proved decisive. Greenwood is now expected to sign a four-year deal in Istanbul, earning a remarkable net salary of €10 million per season.
Intricate financial arrangements
When Greenwood moved from Manchester United to Marseille in the summer of 2024, his contract included a sell-on clause that entitled the English club to a share of any future transfer fee. To manage this, Fenerbahce adopted a unique approach, differentiating themselves from rival suitors such as Atletico Madrid, who had tried to secure a direct deal with Marseille. Instead, the Turkish side opted to conduct separate negotiations with both Marseille (OM) and United to settle the respective financial portions owed to each club.
The total package for the English forward is reportedly worth €42 million, including add-ons, ensuring that Manchester United’s sell-on clause is fully honoured. Contrary to earlier claims that Marseille held a 60% ownership stake in the player, the updated agreement guarantees that the French club will receive a net payment of around €30 million once the deal is complete.
Internal tensions at Marseille
Although Greenwood’s talent on the field is unquestionable, Marseille’s leadership viewed his transfer as a financial requirement, as removing his substantial wages offers crucial relief to the club’s salary structure. Once the financial details were ironed out with Fenerbahce, Marseille involved Manchester United in the discussions to finalise the distribution of proceeds and ensure all sides were satisfied.
Behind closed doors, growing dissatisfaction regarding Greenwood’s attitude and commitment throughout the campaign reportedly played a part in Marseille’s decision to approve his sale, despite his obvious potential. The operation was led by Marseille’s recently appointed sporting director, Gregory Lorenzi, who considered the forward’s exit an essential step in reshaping the first-team squad for the future.
European opportunities await Greenwood after standout season
Greenwood delivered a standout 2025–26 season with Marseille, scoring 26 goals and contributing 11 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions. His stellar form played a vital role in helping the club finish fifth in Ligue 1, securing a place in next season’s Europa League. Meanwhile, his prospective new team, Fenerbahce, ended their domestic campaign as runners-up to Galatasaray, earning a spot in the Champions League second qualifying round.
