Why is it compulsory to get down from the car while filling CNG? Learn the scientific reasons

Today, the use of CNG vehicles has increased rapidly as a cost-effective alternative to the rising prices of petrol and diesel. But, while filling the car at the CNG pump, all the passengers and the driver are asked to get down from the car. Often passengers in a hurry get tired of this rule or argue with the mechanic. But this is not just a government rule, but a very important step taken for the safety of motorists.

Purpose behind the rule

The main reason behind this rule is ‘high gas pressure’. Petrol or diesel is released in liquid form under very low pressure in the tank. In contrast, CNG is in gaseous form. When CNG is filled in the cylinder of a car, it is released under a tremendous pressure of around 200 to 220 bar. This pressure is about 6 to 7 times higher than the air pressure in a normal tire.

Fatal effects of high gas pressure

While filling gas at such a high pressure, if there is any technical fault in the vehicle cylinder or gas pipeline, there is a high risk of cylinder burst or gas leakage. If there is a spark while filling the gas or a compressor malfunction, a car can catch fire in seconds. In such a situation, if the passengers are sitting inside the car, the doors of the car get locked and they do not get time to get out and may suffocate or catch fire causing great disaster.

Security approach

In addition, although CNG gas is lighter than air, in the event of a leak, it can spread rapidly within the closed cabin of the vehicle. Accumulation of gas in a closed vehicle can cause suffocation. As per government regulations and for safety reasons, it is mandatory that the engine of the vehicle should be completely switched off while filling CNG, all passengers should stand at a safe distance from the vehicle and not use mobile phones.
