Ruben Amorim has openly admitted that he made several mistakes during his managerial stint at Manchester United.
The Portuguese coach was dismissed from his post at Old Trafford in January after a difficult 14-month spell in charge of the club.
Following his departure from England, Amorim has taken up the managerial role at AC Milan. Reflecting on his time in the Premier League, he confessed that his tenure at United was far from smooth and that he learned important lessons from the experience.
“It’s difficult to explain the mistakes because, to do that, I’d have to describe the entire context of that period,” Amorim said.
“It’s hard to point out each one. The only thing I can say is that I learned a lot and, yes, I made some mistakes.”
Amorim arrived at Manchester United with a strong reputation as one of Europe’s top young managers after achieving great success with Sporting CP in Portugal.
However, his tactical approach failed to deliver results in the Premier League, despite receiving significant financial backing in the transfer market.
In his first season, the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League table and were defeated by Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.
Despite the disappointing campaign, the club’s management decided to keep faith in Amorim and provided funds for key attacking reinforcements during the following transfer window.
Yet, the team showed little progress. Amorim’s insistence on using a back-three formation drew heavy criticism from supporters and former players alike, while his public remarks criticising the club’s hierarchy in January ultimately sealed his fate.
After Amorim’s dismissal, Michael Carrick was appointed as interim manager and swiftly revitalised the squad, guiding Manchester United back into the Champions League.
As a result of his impressive turnaround, Carrick was later confirmed as the club’s permanent manager at Old Trafford.
