Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca is reportedly facing an early challenge in his efforts to bring some of his former Chelsea players to the Etihad Stadium.
The Italian coach, who aims to guide City back to the top of the Premier League after recent title wins by Liverpool and Arsenal, is looking to strengthen his squad with players he trusts from past collaborations. However, his transfer plans appear to have encountered complications sooner than expected.
At the top of Maresca’s transfer wishlist is Chelsea defender Malo Gusto. According to reports from The Athletic, the Blues have placed a hefty £75 million valuation on the French right back, a figure that Manchester City consider excessively high. As a result, a move for Gusto seems improbable at this stage.
Even with the recent signing of Italian right back Marco Palestra from Atalanta, Chelsea have maintained their stance. The club reportedly sees Palestra as an additional option to create internal competition rather than as a replacement for any potential departures.
City have long admired Tino Livramento, but Maresca is eager to add further depth to his defensive line, particularly on the right flank. Currently, Matheus Nunes serves as the first-choice option in that position, though he primarily operates as a midfielder.
Among the other names being evaluated by Manchester City are Feyenoord’s 20-year-old Dutch talent Givairo Read, valued at around £25 million. While Read is considered a promising prospect, he would require time to adjust to the pace and physicality of the Premier League.
Another young player being monitored is 20-year-old Martim Fernandes from Porto, who has impressed in Portugal and could fit City’s long-term development strategy.
Maresca’s ambition to craft a well-balanced and competitive side remains clear, but Chelsea’s firm position on Gusto’s valuation has proven to be an immediate stumbling block in his recruitment drive.
