Yamaha Aerox E vs Ather 450 Apex— The battle between premium and sporty electric scooters has intensified in the Indian market. Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer Yamaha has launched its new flagship electric scooter Yamaha Aerox E in the country. The company has fixed its starting ex-showroom price at Rs 2.81 lakh (Bengaluru), which makes it the most expensive electric scooter in India. Ather Energy’s fastest scooter Ather 450 Apex, which is already present in this segment, is giving it a tough challenge. Let us know which of these two electric scooters can prove to be a better option for you in terms of huge price and specifications.

Power and Performance: Who is ahead in terms of speed?

If we talk about speed and pickup, Ather 450 Apex gets a peak power output of 7kW with PMSM motor, which generates 9.3bhp power and 26Nm torque. This scooter accelerates from 0 to 40 km per hour in just 2.9 seconds and its top speed is 100 km per hour.

On the other hand, the new Yamaha Aerox E has a bigger 9.5kW motor, which generates 12.9hp power and 48Nm bumper torque. Yamaha is way ahead in terms of torque, which gives better pulling power while climbing climbs or sudden overtaking. However, its top speed is 95.5 kmph, which is slightly less than the Ather. Yamaha has also provided a special ‘Boost Mode’ along with three riding modes (Eco, Standard, Power).

Battery and range math: whose pack is more practical?

Both companies have adopted different approaches in terms of battery setup. Ather 450 Apex gets a 3.7kWh fixed (non-removable) battery. The company claims that it gives a certified range of 157 km once fully charged. Its real-world range also comes out to be around 110 km.

In contrast, the Yamaha Aerox E has two removable battery packs of 1.5kWh, i.e. the total capacity is 3kWh. Its advantage is that you can easily charge the battery in your home or office by removing it. However, its certified range is only 117 km (106 km as per some claims of Yamaha). In actual conditions, this range may reduce to 65 to 75 km, which is considered to be its biggest weakness.

Design, features and space: a test of practicality

In terms of design, both the scooters come with a sporty look. The design of the Ather is compact and sleek, while the Arox E is based on a big maxi-scooter design theme, similar to the petrol Arox 155. Yamaha’s road presence looks quite muscular thanks to the large 14-inch alloy wheels.

But in practical use both scooters have some drawbacks:

  • Storage Space: In Yamaha Aerox E, both the batteries fit under the seat, due to which its boot space has reduced to just 15 litres. It is also difficult to fit a full-face helmet in it.
  • Weight: Yamaha Aerox E weighs 139 kg, which is 13 kg more than its petrol version. Due to the heavy weight, its rear suspension may feel a little hard on bad roads.
  • Features: Both scooters have a brilliant TFT display with smartphone connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation and call/SMS alerts. For safety, Yamaha also gets Traction Control System (TCS) as standard with single-channel ABS.

Big difference in price and availability

On the price front, the Ather 450 Apex looks to be a direct winner. The ex-showroom price of this top-end model of Ather is around Rs 1.95 lakh. At the same time, the ex-showroom price of Yamaha Erox E starts from Rs 2.81 lakh. Coming to on-road, this Yamaha scooter will cost around Rs 2.90 lakh. Additionally, the Yamaha Erox E is currently being made available only at ‘Blue Square’ showrooms in select cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune and Chennai in the initial phase.

Final Verdict: Which is Best for You?

If you want an electric scooter that has good range, is proven in the Indian market and is priced under Rs 2 lakh, then the Ather 450 Apex is the perfect and value for money option for you.

On the contrary, if budget is not the limit and you are a fan of maxi-scooter styling that stands out on the road, the convenience of a removable battery and Yamaha’s premium branding, then go for the Yamaha Aerox E. From the point of view of common customers, this price of Yamaha is much higher than its range.
