Mercedes-AMG is setting its sights on converting traditional hot hatch enthusiasts to electric power with the debut of the all-new CLA 45. This high-performance EV boasts supercar-level acceleration, advanced torque vectoring, and even a simulated exhaust soundtrack that delivers the distinctive pops and bangs AMG fans love.
Presented in both saloon and Shooting Brake estate configurations, the CLA 45 marks AMG’s first ‘45’ model powered entirely by electricity. Unlike the standard CLA, this version is completely re-engineered beneath the surface. It uses three axial flux motors developed by Oxfordshire-based Yasa, working in tandem with a 94kWh battery pack shared with the upcoming C-Class Electric. The CLA 45 also benefits from a comprehensive aerodynamic redesign aimed at increasing downforce while preserving its 416-mile driving range.
The tri-motor configuration consists of one motor up front and two on the rear axle, collectively producing up to 671bhp via all four wheels. Interestingly, the rear motors alone are capable of delivering the full power output, although battery throughput currently limits total performance. Future software updates may unlock even more capability. This setup also supports a dedicated drift mode for those seeking an extra thrill.
The front motor activates only when additional traction is required, such as during performance driving or poor weather conditions.
Thanks to this powertrain, the 2.3-tonne CLA 45 saloon sprints from 0-62mph in just 3.0 seconds (3.2 seconds for the Shooting Brake). That’s quicker than some of AMG’s most extreme combustion models, including the SLS AMG Black Series (3.6 seconds), and nearly matches the F1-powered AMG One, which reaches the same mark in 2.9 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155mph, or 168mph when equipped with the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package.
Performance is slightly tempered when the optional ‘AMGForce’ simulated engine and gearbox system is activated. This software emulates the sound and power delivery of the outgoing M139 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine—previously the world’s most powerful series-production four-cylinder—and pairs it with a virtual eight-speed gearbox.
To enhance the sensory experience, vibrating motors are installed in the front seats to mimic the vibrations of a petrol engine. The synthetic sound is projected both inside and outside the car, complete with pops and crackles during deceleration. Drivers can choose between quiet and loud modes, with Mercedes claiming the latter rivals aftermarket exhaust systems in intensity.
The AMGForce system engages automatically in S+ mode but is disabled in the Race setting to prioritise maximum performance.
AMG has also introduced a predictive battery management system that optimises energy usage during high-performance driving. It dynamically adjusts power delivery based on track conditions—reducing output through corners to prevent overheating and ensuring maximum acceleration on long straights, such as the Döttinger Höhe section of the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Regenerative braking plays a major role, with the electric motors capable of feeding up to 300kW back into the battery. Complementing this is an upgraded hydraulic braking setup featuring 390mm ventilated discs and six-piston calipers at the front, and 350mm ventilated discs with single-piston calipers at the rear.
Chassis upgrades include a 24mm-wider track than the standard CLA, adaptive suspension dampers, and an active rear spoiler for improved stability at high speeds.
Distinctive design elements set the CLA 45 apart from its standard counterpart. The rear spoiler and muscular stance give it a more aggressive look, while customers can opt to replace the front light bar with a functional air duct for added aerodynamic efficiency. It rides on 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, with 20-inch options available, and features AMG’s largest-ever diffuser on a compact model.
In Eco, Comfort, and Sport modes, the rear spoiler retracts until 90mph to reduce drag and extend range, while in S+ and Race modes it remains fully deployed. Drivers can also manually control its position via the steering wheel.
The CLA 45 saloon claims a maximum range of 416 miles on a single charge, with the Shooting Brake rated at 398 miles. This efficiency is aided by a system that disconnects the front motor when not required—reducing friction losses. In normal driving modes, the front motor remains disengaged up to 100mph, reactivating within a millisecond when extra traction is needed.
A heat pump comes standard to maximise charging performance. When using the built-in navigation system, it automatically preconditions the battery before reaching a charging station. The CLA 45 supports up to 330kW DC fast charging, allowing a 10–80% charge in just 22 minutes—or about 168 miles of range in 10 minutes, according to Mercedes.
Inside, the cabin receives a sporty makeover, featuring standard bucket seats with heavy bolstering, AMG-specific trim finishes, new seatbelt colours, and a steering wheel with integrated drive mode selectors. Notably, the traditional rear bench has been replaced with two individual seats, making this a dedicated four-seater.
Deliveries for the new CLA 45 are set to begin next year. Pricing details are yet to be confirmed, but given that the previous petrol-powered CLA 45 started just below £70,000, this new electric version is expected to exceed that mark. Its closest competitor will be the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N, which starts at £65,800.
