At times, an automobile can mean far more than just a way to get from one place to another. For passionate car enthusiasts, forming a deep emotional bond with a vehicle is nothing unusual. Recently, the Internet rediscovered photos of Minnesota-based businessman and dedicated Chevrolet Corvette lover, Jim Feneis, who chose to have his body displayed inside his first-generation C1 Corvette during his 2023 funeral. Naturally, such an unconventional farewell sparked a wide range of reactions online. Yet, there’s much more to Feneis’s story than those viral images suggest.

The photos from Feneis’s funeral began circulating again on social media after being shared on Reddit and later picked up by outlets such as Corvette Blogger. However, the actual funeral took place earlier, in April 2023, according to a post from Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in St. Cloud, Minnesota. This aligns with details shared by the original Reddit poster in the “Awful Taste But Great Execution” subreddit, who claimed to be the child of someone who attended the funeral. They explained that Feneis was shown “driving” his beloved Corvette during the ceremony. “According to the funeral director, his body was kept frozen in a seated position for about a month before the service so he could be displayed behind the wheel, as he had requested,” the post stated.

The Reddit thread and the funeral home’s Facebook post both contain images of Feneis following his passing. Viewers are advised to approach them respectfully and avoid viewing the pictures if they may cause discomfort or if they intend to be disrespectful toward the Feneis family.

However, Feneis’s passion for his Corvette was only one part of his automotive story. Not only did he personally plan his unique farewell, but he also made arrangements for his entire car collection to be preserved after his death. He established the James Feneis Charitable Foundation, aiming to convert his two-storey garage into a complete automobile museum. Throughout his life, Feneis found immense joy in sharing his love for classic cars with his community and wanted that connection to continue even after his passing. “He’d say, ‘This is my garage with an attached house,’” recalled his friend Bonnie Lenzmeier in an interview with KSTP 5 ABC Eyewitness News in the Minneapolis area in 2024. “He wanted this to be a place where local kids could come, see the cars, learn about the history upstairs, and admire all the neon signs.”

Although it has not yet officially opened, Feneis’s dream has materialised in the form of the Idle Ridge Car Museum in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. Dedicated to his memory, the museum showcases his personal collection of cars, vintage artefacts, a 1950s-style diner, and even a functioning car wash. The venue presents itself as a charming tribute to motoring history and offers private events for smaller groups, with plans to allocate specific hours for public visitors as well.

At first glance, seeing a man laid to rest in his 1960 Chevrolet Corvette might seem unusual—and to some extent, it is. Still, it’s hard not to admire the depth of Jim Feneis’s passion for automobiles and his desire to pass that enthusiasm to future generations. While the resurfaced images have drawn viral attention, the greater message behind them is one of dedication and legacy. Hopefully, this renewed interest will inspire more people to visit the Idle Ridge Car Museum and celebrate the life and vision of a true car lover. Rest in peace, Mr. Feneis.
