Bruno Fernandes has opened up for the first time since Portugal’s exit from the World Cup at the hands of Spain. The Manchester United captain admitted feeling “sad, frustrated, and disillusioned” while expressing gratitude to his team-mates, coaches, staff, and fans following a campaign that ended sooner than anticipated.
Portugal’s World Cup run came to an end against Spain, as the Selecao — seen as one of the tournament favourites — were knocked out in the round of 16 by a narrow 1-0 margin. Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino struck a stoppage-time winner to seal the victory for Spain, eliminating Roberto Martinez’s squad. The result marked a major setback for Portugal, with Martinez stepping down as head coach after the tournament. Fernandes, who had consistently voiced confidence in the team’s ability to challenge for the title, has now spoken about the disappointment surrounding their early exit.
Breaking his silence on X after the elimination, Fernandes shared his reflections on the defeat and paid tribute to those involved with the national setup throughout the campaign.
He wrote: “Sad, frustrated, and disillusioned. This group of players raised my expectations, not only because of their quality but also because of the incredible team we’ve built over these years.”
He added: “Thank you to all the players, coaching staff, and everyone who supported and helped us every day during the World Cup. To all the Portuguese people, a huge thank you for your support and belief.”
Portugal’s tournament journey had begun with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo, followed by a commanding 5-0 win over Uzbekistan. A goalless stalemate with Colombia secured their place in the round of 32, where they edged past Croatia 2-1. However, their campaign came to an abrupt halt in the round of 16 as defensive lapses and a lack of finishing touch proved costly against Spain.
With the World Cup campaign now over, Fernandes will take a short break before returning for Manchester United’s pre-season training. The Portuguese midfielder is expected to link back up with his club after a brief summer rest, shifting focus from international disappointment to preparing for the upcoming domestic season.
