Torrential rains wreaked havoc across the country. Several states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Gujarat, have reported numerous deaths due to flooding, accidents, and lightning strikes, while a red alert has been issued.

Torrential rains wreaked havoc in many parts of the country on Thursday (July 9). The downpour submerged roads, uprooted trees, damaged property, and severely disrupted normal life. More than 10 people have died in various rain-related incidents across the country. The Meteorological Department has issued warnings of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several states, while authorities are engaged in relief and rescue operations.

Incessant rains caused waterlogging, fallen trees, and massive traffic jams in the national capital, Delhi. The death toll from a building collapse in Rohini has risen to three. Sixty-eight complaints of waterlogging were reported in the city, and several areas, including ITO, NH-48, Ring Road, MB Road, Punjabi Bagh, Dwarka, Sangam Vihar, and New Delhi Railway Station, were affected. Following the heavy rains, Delhi's air quality was recorded as the cleanest since September 2023.

Damage in Gujarat-Maharashtra

Floodwaters in Surat, Gujarat, are slowly receding, but the recovery of six more bodies has raised the death toll from the rains to 17. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited the affected areas. Another body was recovered from the rubble of a collapsed building at a waste-to-energy plant in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Maharashtra, while several people remain feared trapped. A man injured by a falling tree in Thane also died.

Red alert in UP

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts in western Uttar Pradesh. Rain and lightning have killed at least seven people in the state. Isolated incidents occurred in Sant Kabir Nagar, Kushinagar, Bulandshahr, Shamli, and Ghaziabad . Heavy to very heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for several districts.

Impact in hill states

Floods and landslides damaged homes, roads, and crops in six districts of Arunachal Pradesh. A central team from the Home Ministry visited the affected areas. In Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, landslides damaged three houses and a cowshed, while a 100-foot-long iron bridge submerged, cutting off Lippa village. In Uttarakhand, continuous rains closed more than 100 roads, and schools were closed amid a red alert in several districts.

Monsoon across the country

Heavy rains also caused waterlogging and disrupted traffic in many parts of Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and the National Capital Region (NCR). According to the IMD), the southwest monsoon has now reached the entire country. The first nine days of July have seen significantly more rainfall than normal. Orange and yellow alerts have also been issued for several districts in Kerala.
