Why did Truecaller lash out at TRAI's rules? It issued a challenge, stating, "The threat of spam calls is rising."

Truecaller has publicly challenged TRAI's (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) anti-spam framework. The company states that these regulations make it difficult for the caller ID platform to protect users from unwanted calls. The dispute centers on TRAI rules that instruct caller ID apps not to label calls originating from the '1400' and '1600' commercial phone number series as 'spam'.

The issue came to light when Truecaller CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala commented on the regulator on X, asking if people knew why spam calls had increased and noting that the situation was likely to worsen. Jhunjhunwala stated that this policy has eroded customer trust in business calls and led to the misuse of these number series. According to an Economic Times report, TRAI is also considering taking action against caller ID apps that mark these calls as spam.

**Launch of the 1400-1600 Series in 2024**
TRAI introduced the 1400 and 1600 number series in 2024 to enable users to easily identify commercial calls. The 1400 series is designated for telemarketing, while the 1600 series is for service and transactional calls. The regulator stated that the move aimed to curb spam and fraud across telecom networks in India.

However, Jhunjhunwala claims the system has backfired; citing Truecaller's internal data, he noted that over the past eight months, users have rejected 81 percent of calls from the 1400 series and 79 percent of calls from the 1600 series. They also stated that, during this period, users blocked 74 million calls originating from these numbers. Since the platform cannot mark these numbers specifically as spam, Truecaller has introduced a "Frequently Blocked" badge. This alerts users when a number has been blocked by the community on multiple occasions.
