Ousmane Dembele has shared how Kylian Mbappe’s timely advice moments before France’s second goal proved vital in their 2-0 World Cup quarter-final win over Morocco. The French winger also reflected on his growing leadership within the team and emphasised that Les Bleus remain completely focused on their mission to capture the trophy.
Mbappe’s quick thinking turned the tide
France booked their spot in the World Cup semi-finals after a convincing 2-0 victory over Morocco, and Dembele attributed the crucial second goal to Mbappe’s sharp tactical input. According to Dembele, Mbappe instructed him to stay central and be ready to launch a counter-attack just minutes before the decisive move. The captain then executed a clever run to draw defenders away, creating the space Dembele needed to finish the play. The win ensured Didier Deschamps’ men qualified for their third consecutive World Cup semi-final.
Dembele applauds Mbappe’s leadership
In an interview with M6 after the match, Dembele explained how Mbappe’s on-field guidance changed the dynamics of the game. He also lauded the captain’s mental resilience, particularly after Mbappe missed a penalty earlier in the encounter.
“Kylian, two or three minutes before the goal, told me to stay in the centre. As soon as we had the chance, we would go on a counter-attack,” Dembele recalled.
“That’s exactly what happened. He made a brilliant run to open up space, and I saw that I had a bit of an angle. I just tried to get my shot on target, and it went in.”
Speaking further about Mbappe’s leadership, Dembele told Maxifoot, “He’s an exceptional player, our captain. He’s fearless and has a winning mentality. We’re expecting even more goals from Kylian.”
France’s experienced core delivers once more
Dembele celebrated France’s continued success in reaching yet another World Cup semi-final, making it clear that the team’s focus now shifts to securing a spot in the final and ultimately lifting the trophy.
“We’re very happy,” Dembele said. “Reaching our third consecutive World Cup semi-final with the French national team is remarkable. We’ll keep our focus to ensure we go all the way.”
The Paris Saint-Germain forward also reflected on his expanding role within the squad, noting the importance of experience and unity after ten years with the national team. “I’ve been with the French team for a decade now, and I’m one of the longest-serving members. It’s important to help give everyone a voice. As I mentioned, staying focused was crucial against Morocco — they’re a strong side — but we stayed composed and got our reward,” he explained.
Semi-final test on the horizon
France will now head to Dallas for their semi-final clash, where they will take on the winner of the Spain versus Belgium quarter-final. With Mbappe leading the attack and his understanding with Dembele proving instrumental against Morocco, Les Bleus will aim to carry that momentum into another major showdown as they push toward the World Cup final.
