Harry Kane’s outstanding run of form throughout the 2025-26 season, particularly at the World Cup finals, has drawn widespread attention. Former England midfielder Danny Murphy spoke to GOAL to share why the prolific striker is performing at the peak of his career. According to Murphy, there are two major reasons why the Three Lions’ record-breaking captain is currently playing at his very best.
Kane’s name continues to be etched in the history books. Having already become Tottenham Hotspur’s all-time leading scorer after his breakthrough in north London, he sought a fresh challenge in the summer of 2023 — one that would bring him closer to winning major silverware.
Since joining Bayern Munich, the England captain has maintained extraordinary personal standards. He has scored 146 goals in 147 appearances for the German champions, including 61 goals last season. During his time at the Allianz Arena, he has also lifted two Bundesliga titles.
On the international stage, Kane has represented England 119 times — just six short of Peter Shilton’s all-time record — and has found the net 85 times. His six goals at the 2026 World Cup have guided England into yet another quarter-final, where they are set to face Norway on Saturday.
At 32, Kane appears nearly unstoppable, maintaining a level of dominance that has placed him on the brink of being considered England’s greatest-ever footballer. A World Cup triumph in North America could cement that legacy, and a Ballon d’Or award may also be within his reach.
When asked about the reasons behind Kane’s remarkable form, Murphy, speaking on behalf of BetWright football betting, told GOAL: “Timing is crucial in football when you’re playing so much. You want to hit your peak at the right moment. In previous tournaments, it looked as if he was carrying an injury or wasn’t at his sharpest. This season, however, he’s stayed largely injury-free. Playing in a dominant Bayern Munich team means he hasn’t had to expend as much physical energy as he did at Tottenham.”
Murphy continued: “Because he’s such a big player physically, he needs to be in top condition to perform at his best and look sharp. Of course, Kane’s an exceptional finisher and a technically brilliant player — even at 50-60% he can score goals. But now, he’s fully fit, hasn’t been injured, and plays in a side where he doesn’t need to press constantly. He just looks superb physically.”
Murphy further added: “Technically, no one has ever doubted Kane’s quality. Everyone knows what a wonderful finisher he is. The only question has been about his physical readiness. In the past, he’s entered tournaments still recovering from ankle injuries. This season has gone perfectly for him, so he arrived at the World Cup in great physical shape and full of confidence after scoring so many goals.”
“You can see it in his performances — he looks completely comfortable and at ease. It’s fantastic to see him enjoying a tournament like this after the criticism he’s faced in previous years. You can call it criticism, but now he’s receiving the praise he deserves. Sometimes, it’s all about timing and a bit of luck — entering a major tournament in the best possible physical and mental condition.”
Looking ahead to the quarter-finals, England and Kane will hope their good fortune continues when they face Erling Haaland’s Norway in Miami. Thomas Tuchel’s side will be missing key players at right-back due to injury and suspension, but the Three Lions’ momentum is building after a hard-fought victory over Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium. With 60 years of heartbreak to erase, Kane — England’s talismanic No.9 — will once again be expected to lead from the front.
