Cape Verde’s veteran goalkeeper Vozinha has been bestowed with an extraordinary recognition as a newly-discovered marine mollusc species has been named after him by Spanish scientist Jesus Ortea. The honour comes as a tribute to the 40-year-old’s outstanding performances at the World Cup, where he played a key role in helping Cape Verde make a historic debut appearance.

A scientific tribute inspired by World Cup heroics

According to The Athletic, researcher Jesus Ortea chose to name a new species of marine mollusc after Vozinha. The species, named Aldisa vozinhai, is a small, bright red sea slug measuring approximately four millimetres in length. It was previously unknown to science and has now been formally described in Ortea’s publication, Historias de la Bioadversidad (Biodiversity Stories).

The mollusc was found in the Caribbean waters near Havana, Cuba, and Guadeloupe. Ortea deliberately timed the release of his work to coincide with the World Cup, following Vozinha’s remarkable man-of-the-match performance in Cape Verde’s goalless draw against European champions Spain. In that match, the 40-year-old goalkeeper made seven crucial saves. The tribute serves as a unique intersection of football and marine biology, acknowledging Vozinha’s sporting influence late in his career.

Why Vozinha was chosen for this honour

The same report explains that Ortea’s decision to name the species after Vozinha was also an expression of gratitude towards the people of Cape Verde. The Spanish scientist has a longstanding association with the island nation, having been awarded the Medal of Environmental Merit in 2023 for his significant contributions to marine biodiversity research in the archipelago. This relationship ultimately inspired him to dedicate the new discovery to Cape Verde’s national team veteran goalkeeper.

This is not the first time Ortea has celebrated a footballer in such a way. The University of Oviedo professor had previously named another newly-discovered species of tiny marine sea snail after former Real Madrid and Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas in 2019.

A lasting legacy on and off the field

Vozinha’s World Cup journey has earned him global acclaim. By making his appearance at 40 years and 12 days old, he became the oldest player to represent a nation in its World Cup debut. His career spans multiple countries, including stints in Cape Verde, Moldova, Slovakia, Cyprus, and Portugal.

His popularity soared during the tournament, with his Instagram followers skyrocketing from 50,000 before Cape Verde’s first match to 28.5 million by the time of reporting—cementing his status as one of the World Cup’s breakout stars.

Continuing Cape Verde’s historic run

Vozinha played in all four of Cape Verde’s World Cup fixtures, keeping another clean sheet against Saudi Arabia as the team advanced to the round of 32. He also delivered an impressive performance in their 3-2 extra-time defeat to Argentina, recording seven saves despite the loss. The naming of the new species ensures that Vozinha’s World Cup heroics will be remembered not only in footballing circles but also within the scientific community—securing his legacy in both sport and science.
