Tottenham Hotspur have been informed of how many transfer deals they should allow Roberto De Zerbi to personally oversee this summer, with former goalkeeper Brad Friedel telling GOAL that the club could experience a “quick resurrection” into the Premier League’s top six. However, such a turnaround will only be possible if the Italian manager is granted the freedom to reshape an underperforming squad according to his own vision.
In today’s football structure, sporting directors and recruitment committees often have the final say on transfer decisions. It has become increasingly uncommon for managers or head coaches to command full authority over player arrivals and departures. Those in charge of results are typically required to work with players selected through the club’s scouting and recruitment departments.
That system may once again be in play at Spurs over the coming weeks, with the transfer window now open and global scouting networks identifying potential additions that align with the club’s criteria. Even so, De Zerbi must have significant influence — ideally the final say — when it comes to new signings and player exits.
As a manager known for his assertive personality and clear footballing philosophy, De Zerbi is unlikely to passively accept external interference in his methods. The outspoken Italian demands that those around him follow his direction. Tottenham have entrusted him with the responsibility of leading the club back to stability after two consecutive 17th-place finishes and tense relegation battles.
Former Spurs shot-stopper Brad Friedel believes that De Zerbi, who previously managed Brighton and Marseille, is capable of reversing Tottenham’s recent fortunes and awakening a sleeping giant. However, success will depend on the club allowing him to put his imprint on the squad in north London.
Speaking to GOAL in association with MrQ, Friedel was asked whether Spurs could face another relegation scare in the 2026–27 season. He replied: “Nope, they’ll flip the script now. They have the right guy in De Zerbi. I just hope they let him get who he wants in the summer. I know they’ll have to work within financial limits. They generate a lot of revenue, but they should let De Zerbi get what he wants to a reasonable extent.”
Friedel continued: “Let’s say they’re going for six players. At least three of them should be De Zerbi’s own choices — players he specifically wants. He knows what he needs and how he wants his teams to play.”
“He managed to guide one of the squads with the highest injury rates among key players and the lowest confidence levels in the Premier League to survival. Maybe there was a bit of luck involved too — particularly with Aston Villa’s team selection when they faced each other — but Spurs stayed up by the narrowest of margins.”
“There’s no need to overcomplicate things. De Zerbi is a very capable coach who understands his system and playing style. If Spurs recruit players suited to his approach, I truly believe a rapid climb back into the top six is possible.”
Tottenham still have several core players to build around. Key creative talents such as James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski will be crucial, provided they can remain injury-free. The same applies to forwards Dominic Solanke and Mohammed Kudus, whose fitness could determine Spurs’ attacking consistency.
Retaining the services of Dutch defender Micky van de Ven will also be essential, given the transfer interest he is attracting. De Zerbi recognises that significant work must be done in the market before the deadline on August 31 to strengthen from back to front and position Tottenham for a strong comeback in the Premier League standings.
