Former Spain international Cesar Azpilicueta has raised questions over Lamine Yamal’s performance against Belgium.
The young Barcelona forward’s showing in Spain’s 2-1 win over Belgium in the 2026 World Cup quarter-final came under scrutiny from Azpilicueta, despite Yamal being named Man of the Match.
Although Yamal failed to register a goal or assist in the contest, he still took home the individual accolade after displaying his trademark dribbling and creativity in attack.
Speaking as a pundit on the BBC, Azpilicueta shared his thoughts on the teenager’s display while Spain prepare for a semi-final clash against France.
Yamal’s final numbers included four successful dribbles and an expected assist (xA) value of 0.33, contributing to Spain’s narrow win at the Los Angeles Stadium (SoFi Stadium) in Inglewood, California, United States, on 10 July 2026.
However, Azpilicueta pointed out Yamal’s inability to convert his influence into decisive contributions, remarking, “I think he has more to give.”
The former Chelsea and Spain defender elaborated, “I think when Joaquin Seys came on in the second half, he defended Lamine Yamal really well.
“He was solid, and he managed to contain him in several one-on-one situations. Lamine Yamal always wants the ball, and he loves taking on defenders.”
He continued, “It’s true that his game hasn’t translated into goals or assists, but he remains a key part of Spain’s attacking play. He wants to make the difference.”
“He’s constantly on the move, and I believe he still has more to offer the team. Now is the right time for him to show it,” Azpilicueta concluded, expressing confidence ahead of Spain’s semi-final encounter with France.
According to FourFourTwo, Azpilicueta’s comments suggest he is motivating his compatriot while subtly indicating that Spain will need Yamal to step up if they aim to overcome France.
By his high standards, Yamal has endured a relatively underwhelming tournament in North America, and Spain’s hopes of progressing further rest heavily on his ability to rediscover his best form.
This semi-final against Didier Deschamps’ France presents the ideal opportunity for the young winger to reaffirm his stature among the top performers of the competition.
Yamal is undoubtedly one of the brightest prospects in world football, but to help Spain lift the World Cup trophy, he will need to produce a performance befitting of a world champion.
