Atalanta’s Brazilian midfielder Ederson was on the brink of completing a move to Manchester United earlier this summer, but the transfer collapsed at the final moment. As reported by Gazzetta dello Sport, the player is now close to signing a new contract with the Italian side at the New Balance Arena.
The deal seemed nearly done, with Atalanta and Manchester United having agreed on a €45 million transfer fee. Ederson even underwent his medical examinations while on international duty with Brazil at the World Cup, after receiving an unexpected call-up from Carlo Ancelotti following Wesley Franca’s injury.
However, Manchester United decided to withdraw from the agreement. Instead of sealing a long-term deal with the 20-time English champions, Ederson is now set to return to Bergamo, where he is expected to sign a contract extension. His current contract runs until 2027, and Atalanta are eager to secure his future to fend off possible interest from top European clubs.
Atalanta were initially reluctant to part ways with Ederson. Only last summer, the Bergamo-based club rejected several offers from Inter Milan, identifying the 27-year-old as a crucial part of their long-term project.
After a season disrupted by injuries early on, Ederson re-emerged as one of Raffaele Palladino’s standout players. He made 30 appearances in Serie A and featured nine times in the UEFA Champions League, reaffirming his importance to the squad.
The arrival of Maurizio Sarri as head coach is not expected to alter Ederson’s position at the club. In fact, the former Europa League winners are determined to keep hold of the Brazilian by offering him improved terms, aiming to prevent another transfer saga in upcoming windows.
Although Ederson’s final decision remains uncertain, Sarri is hopeful that the opportunity to play a leading role under his management will convince the midfielder to commit his future to Atalanta.
