Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has described Mikel Merino as a player “tailor-made” for the national team’s tactical approach after their narrow 2-1 victory against Belgium in the World Cup quarter-finals. The midfielder’s contribution proved decisive as La Roja booked their place in the semi-finals of the tournament.
Merino shines as Spain set up France clash
Spain advanced to the semi-finals of the World Cup with a 2-1 win over Belgium, where Merino made a telling impact after being introduced from the bench. Although not always part of the starting eleven, the midfielder once again demonstrated his versatility and importance to the team, capable of influencing matches when it matters most. The triumph now sets up a highly anticipated semi-final encounter with France.
De la Fuente on Merino’s unique importance
After the match, De la Fuente praised Merino’s ability to adapt and his importance within Spain’s tactical framework. He explained that the midfielder fits seamlessly into the possession-oriented style that defines the team and can be trusted to deliver whenever called upon.
“Merino has so many qualities; he could play for any national side or club. For us, he is tailor-made for this team and this model. We know that whenever we need him, he’s always ready,” De la Fuente said in comments shared with Marca. “It’s unfair that Mikel doesn’t start every game, but it would be equally unfair if someone else had to miss out.”
He continued, “Only eleven can start, and everyone understands their role and what’s expected of them. When they come on, they know exactly what to do, and that’s why it’s a joy to coach them. Merino is a complete, multi-purpose footballer; he has played as a defensive midfielder, a number 6, 8, 10, and even as a 9 — and he performs well in all of them.”
De la Fuente further added, “He possesses a wide range of skills and can play in different roles while maintaining top-level performance. He can be a centre forward, an attacking midfielder, or a playmaker. His reading of the game is exceptional — he understands the team’s needs perfectly. His attitude towards football and life is one of dedication and unity, even though he’s a star player. At one point, we even considered bringing him on as a centre forward, and the situation worked out just as we hoped.”
Spain eye semi-final challenge against France
The result sets up a thrilling semi-final showdown with France — a contest De la Fuente believes will be equally challenging for both teams. After navigating a demanding route to the last four, the Spanish boss expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to overcome the 2018 World Cup winners, reminding that Spain have already proven capable of defeating top-tier opponents on the global stage.
“We’ll give everything we have to beat France,” he said. “They’ll be just as concerned about facing us. We’re the only team in the world to have beaten them in two consecutive matches. We want more, and since we’re here, we’ll go all out to achieve it. We’ll fight for it.”
Spain aim for another step towards the ultimate prize
Spain now shift their focus to the semi-final against France, as they continue their pursuit of World Cup glory. The match is scheduled to take place at Dallas Stadium on Tuesday, July 14.
