Renowned Pakistani actress and television host Nida Yasir has come under heavy criticism on social media after advising parents to focus not only on material wealth but also on helping their children become independent by allowing them to travel on their own.

Speaking during a recent television program, Nida Yasir urged parents to invest in memorable life experiences with their children instead of concentrating solely on assets such as houses, property, jewelry, and other material possessions. According to her, raising confident and self-reliant children is just as valuable as leaving them financial security.

While discussing parenting styles, she pointed out that many children today are so overprotected that they struggle to perform basic everyday tasks without assistance. She said that some children are unable to cross a road by themselves because their parents have always been overly cautious and protective.

Nida questioned how a child could grow into an independent adult if they lacked the confidence to handle simple responsibilities. She stressed that children need opportunities to make decisions, face challenges, and learn from real-life experiences in order to develop confidence and resilience.

The actress further explained that parents should gradually encourage their children to travel independently because they would not always be there to accompany them throughout life. She said the purpose of education is not only to earn academic qualifications but also to prepare young people to become capable, responsible, and self-sufficient individuals.

Highlighting the importance of practical life skills, Nida remarked that parents should teach their children creativity, decision-making, and independence. She even suggested allowing children to travel alone on relatively safe domestic routes, giving the example of a trip from Karachi to Lahore, as a way to help them gain confidence and learn how to manage themselves responsibly.

Responding to people who oppose the idea, Nida said many parents believe children should never travel alone, but she argued that if they are never given the opportunity to do things independently, they will struggle to become self-reliant adults. According to her, independence is developed through experience rather than constant supervision.

Critics argued that her advice does not reflect the current security situation in Pakistan.
