Erling Haaland is aiming to build an extraordinary legacy with Norway at the 2026 World Cup. But what lies behind the story of this remarkable striker?
Haaland’s journey has been nothing short of spectacular. From his early days in Norway to dismantling defences in the Premier League with Manchester City, he has now taken his explosive form onto the global stage with Norway at the 2026 World Cup.
The towering forward, known for his immense strength and physical dominance, is the son of Alf-Inge Haaland — a former professional footballer who played for Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City, and Bryne.
Growing up, Erling was a devoted Leeds supporter and began his footballing path at Bryne, where he joined the youth setup.
Haaland progressed through Bryne’s youth ranks between 2005 and 2016 before breaking into the first team in 2017. He then moved to Molde FK, another Norwegian club, and continued to impress before making a major leap in 2019.
It was at Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga that Haaland truly announced himself to the world, scoring an incredible 29 goals in just 27 appearances.
Premier League fans might remember his explosive performance against Liverpool during the 2019/20 Champions League season, when he scored in a near comeback as Salzburg rallied from 3-0 down to 3-3 before eventually losing 4-3. That match firmly established his reputation on Europe’s biggest stage.
Shortly afterwards, and after being named Footballer of the Year with Salzburg, Haaland joined Borussia Dortmund. There, he scored an astonishing 86 goals in 89 games, forming a formidable partnership with England’s Jude Bellingham during his time in Germany.
Despite his incredible size and power, Haaland’s former youth coach in Norway recalled a very different version of him as a boy. Espen Undheim once said, “He loves the moments. He still thinks and acts like a boy, which keeps his hunger alive… as a young lad, he just loved scoring goals.”
Haaland’s move to the Premier League was transformative. In his debut season with the Cityzens, he was named PFA Players’ Player of the Year and broke Mohamed Salah’s record for most goals in a 38-game Premier League season.
He led Manchester City to a historic treble, helping them finally lift the Champions League trophy. The following 2023/24 season, he claimed another Golden Boot and added yet another Premier League title to his collection.
On the international front, Haaland’s extraordinary goal-scoring record for Norway has often flown under the radar but remains exceptional. At the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2019, he famously scored nine goals in a single match as Norway beat Honduras 12-0.
In World Cup qualifying for the 2026 tournament, he netted 16 goals in just eight appearances, including a five-goal haul against Moldova.
Another memorable highlight came during his Borussia Dortmund days, when he scored a thunderous goal against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League — a strike that echoed around the footballing world.
More recently, Haaland scored five times in one Champions League match for Manchester City in a 7-0 demolition of RB Leipzig, powering Pep Guardiola’s side towards their long-awaited European triumph.
With his relentless goal-scoring prowess and unmatched athleticism, Erling Haaland stands among the most prolific strikers in football history — and many believe he is destined to finish his career as the greatest pure goal-scorer the sport has ever seen.
