Sporting Kansas City unexpectedly leads MLS race to sign Mohamed Salah

A surprising development has emerged in Major League Soccer as Sporting Kansas City has reportedly become the frontrunner to sign Egyptian captain Mohamed Salah.

Earlier this week, speculation began after discussions within MLS circles suggested that LA Galaxy might be pursuing a marquee player following the departure of Gabriel Pec. However, new reports now indicate that another MLS team has entered the fray with serious interest in the former Liverpool FC star.

Interestingly, Sporting Kansas City, which once attempted to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to the United States before he opted for Saudi Arabia, is now being linked as Salah’s most likely destination.

According to recent updates, Sporting Kansas City is currently leading the chase, ahead of other high-profile MLS clubs such as Inter Miami, Chicago Fire, and LA Galaxy. The club is reportedly keen to add Salah to its ranks as part of a long-term vision to rejuvenate the squad and increase its competitive standing.

Following Egypt’s elimination by Argentina at the World Cup, speculation surrounding Salah’s future has intensified. While a move to MLS remains uncertain, the 32-year-old forward is also believed to have lucrative offers from the Saudi Pro League.

Reports suggest that there have been no formal negotiations or concrete discussions between Sporting Kansas City and Salah’s representatives so far. Nonetheless, the recent influx of international stars such as Antoine Griezmann and Robert Lewandowski to American football could pave the way for Salah to consider joining the league.

Despite this, Sporting Kansas City’s current league position may serve as a deterrent. The club sits at the bottom of the Western Conference table, which could make it difficult to convince Salah that the sporting project is strong enough to match his ambitions.

However, the possibility of facing familiar European rivals including Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Müller, Son Heung-min, and Marco Reus might appeal to Salah and rekindle his competitive spirit in a new environment.

MLS insider Tom Bogert, who first broke the news on the potential transfer, has clarified that Salah’s preference currently leans towards continuing his career in Europe or moving to Saudi Arabia rather than joining Major League Soccer.

For Sporting Kansas City to have a realistic chance of landing Salah, the club would need to present a compelling sporting vision and demonstrate clear ambition. At present, their form and results suggest that they may not yet be in a position to attract a player of Salah’s stature.

Moreover, joining the club would mean taking on the challenge of rebuilding a struggling side rather than immediately competing for trophies or playoff success. Despite these challenges, football is full of surprises, and while the move appears improbable, it cannot be entirely ruled out that Mohamed Salah might one day play in MLS.
