Manchester United’s midfield overhaul appears to have taken an unexpected turn, as their move for Ederson has collapsed, shifting the club’s attention towards Roma’s Manu Koné.
As reported by Football Italia, United had reached a €45 million agreement with Atalanta back in June, but the deal was pending the conclusion of Brazil’s World Cup campaign. Following that, United requested further medical examinations before eventually deciding to withdraw from the transfer.
Just a few days later, Roma’s Koné rose to the top of United’s list of targets. Sources suggest that the French midfielder is eager to test himself in the Premier League, and Roma are prepared to sell if they receive an offer exceeding €50 million. The Italian side, despite having qualified for the Champions League, need to comply with UEFA’s financial regulations and are therefore open to a big sale.
Atalanta, for their part, insist that Ederson remains fully fit and attribute United’s decision to a simple change of heart rather than any underlying medical concern.
The main question now is what Manchester United stand to gain by pursuing Koné—and what they might be losing by walking away from Ederson.
