Argentina dug deep on Saturday to secure a 3–1 extra-time victory over Switzerland, with Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez both finding the net to book a World Cup semifinal clash against England in Atlanta on Wednesday.
Lionel Messi and his teammates remain on course to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend a World Cup title. But it was Martínez's goal—and his subsequent celebration—that became the talking point of the match.
Celebration Sparks Debate
After finishing off a rebound from Thiago Almada's shot, Martínez leapt over the advertising boards to celebrate with Argentina fans in the stands—a moment of pure emotion that nearly came with a heavy price.
He had already been booked in the 98th minute, and under IFAB rules, climbing perimeter fencing or approaching spectators in a way that raises safety concerns can result in a caution. A second yellow card would have meant a red card and a suspension for the semifinal against England.
The rules state: "A player must be cautioned, even if the goal is disallowed, for climbing onto a perimeter fence and/or approaching spectators in a manner which causes safety and/or security issues."
Martínez was not shown a second yellow, as the match had already ended. Argentina's result was never in jeopardy, but he could have been ruled out of one of the biggest games of the tournament.
Questions Continue to Mount
The incident adds to a growing conversation throughout this World Cup. Fans have pointed to several decisions that appeared to favor Argentina—starting with Messi avoiding a caution for a foul on Algeria's Aïssa Mandi in their opening match.
Questions around VAR and foul play in opposition goal buildups have also surfaced. Saturday's celebration only gives critics more to discuss.
