Premier League title holders Arsenal are reportedly intensifying their efforts to strengthen their forward line with the addition of Julian Alvarez.
The Gunners are aiming to enhance their championship-winning squad by signing Alvarez from Atletico Madrid ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Former Manchester City forward Alvarez has attracted widespread attention over the past year, with the reigning Premier League champions now making a concerted attempt to lure him away from the Spanish capital.
Arsenal ended their 22-year wait for a league title last season after three successive runners-up finishes. However, the striker role remains one of the few positions in Mikel Arteta’s side that lacks a settled first-choice option.
Last summer, Arsenal brought in Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon, but the Swedish striker endured a difficult debut season at the Emirates Stadium. He was eventually dropped for the UEFA Champions League final against PSG, with Kai Havertz preferred in attack.
Havertz, who spent a significant portion of the season injured and is not a natural centre-forward, left Arsenal short of consistent options up front. Consequently, Arteta and the club’s management are determined to strengthen their attacking depth as they target consecutive league titles.
According to a report from The Independent, Arsenal are now making a serious move to secure Alvarez’s signature before the start of pre-season training.
Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have previously expressed interest in Alvarez, with Real Madrid reportedly having a €150 million bid rejected prior to the FIFA World Cup.
Journalist Miguel Delaney reports that Alvarez has long been Arteta’s preferred attacking target, though the complexity of the deal initially forced Arsenal to explore alternative options, including PSG’s Bradley Barcola.
However, interest from both Spanish powerhouses appears to have cooled, prompting renewed optimism within Arsenal’s camp that a deal could be achievable — despite Alvarez’s current preference to remain in Spain.
One significant obstacle could be the transfer fee. Arsenal are unwilling to exceed £90 million for the Argentine striker, while Atletico Madrid are reluctant to sell and would only consider offers exceeding £100 million. Negotiations could hinge on whether either side is ready to soften its stance.
Alvarez is presently representing Argentina in the United States, where he recently scored his first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup — a remarkable strike against Switzerland in the quarter-finals that secured Argentina’s passage to the semi-finals for the second consecutive tournament.
The report further suggests that Arsenal are also confident of signing Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. According to FourFourTwo, completing deals for both Alvarez and Rogers would be a major declaration of intent as the Gunners prepare for the new season.
As per Transfermarkt, Alvarez’s current market valuation stands at €100 million. His next appearance will come in the World Cup semi-final against England on Wednesday, 15 July.
