According to a source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Suryakumar Yadav could still rejoin the Indian cricket team if he consistently performs well in domestic matches. After leading India to victory in the 2026 T20 World Cup, he has lost his T20I captaincy and was excluded from the squad due to a slump in form ahead of the upcoming tours to Ireland and England. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new T20I captain.
India's Struggles Under New Leadership
Under Iyer's captaincy, India's performance has faltered. The team faced a 2-0 whitewash against Ireland and suffered a 4-0 series defeat to England in the five-match T20I series, with the first match being abandoned due to rain. A BCCI source indicated that while Suryakumar is not currently part of the team's plans, he could make a comeback if he excels in domestic cricket. 'The doors for Suryakumar Yadav are still open,' the source stated.
Recent Series Results
In the fifth T20I at Southampton, India lost by 56 runs, concluding the series against England with a 4-0 defeat after the first match ended without a result. Previously, India lost the fourth T20I by nine wickets, the third by 125 runs, and the second by four wickets. This series loss follows India's first-ever bilateral T20I series defeat to Ireland earlier this year.
Looking Ahead to ODIs
The Indian team is now preparing for the ODI series against England, with seasoned players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma expected to return to the lineup.
