Liverpool have returned to training at the AXA Training Centre, signalling the start of a new chapter under Andoni Iraola. The Spanish manager addressed the media for the first time since taking charge, and while pre-season optimism was evident, his key message was clear — the squad still requires reinforcement.

Iraola, who has stepped into the role of Liverpool head coach, did not attempt to disguise the situation. With two new arrivals already secured, he confirmed that further signings are being pursued as the club works to strengthen areas that faltered during the previous campaign.

He stated, “We’ve signed two players already; we need more, we know this. We are working on this. As a coach I want the players here from day one, selfishly, but we know it doesn’t work like this. We’re working hard for those signings.”

His remarks reflect the reality of modern football recruitment. While managers prefer to have their squads settled early, transfer dealings are rarely concluded so smoothly. Liverpool are still restructuring, and the pace of activity is expected to increase following the conclusion of the World Cup.

The return of senior players this week will allow Iraola to assess his options closely. Joe Gomez, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Kostas Tsimikas are among those rejoining the group as pre-season preparations intensify.

Iraola emphasised that he has already begun fostering relationships with both players and staff within the club, a crucial part of integrating his methods and philosophy at Anfield.

He commented, “I’m obviously trying to help also [with the signings].”

He continued, “I spoke with the players at the World Cup — especially those who have been eliminated and are on holiday. I didn’t want to disturb them during the tournament, but I had some good talks. I used these weeks before training to speak with many people who work here every day. They create a positive environment so our players can perform at their best.”

The situation is straightforward: Liverpool require greater depth and versatility, and Iraola is fully aware of that necessity. While pre-season provides the foundation for his tactical work, the success of Liverpool’s transfer efforts will determine how quickly his ideas are implemented. For now, the message from the AXA Training Centre is clear — Liverpool’s business in the transfer market is far from complete, and their new manager is playing an active role in shaping it.
