Misunderstandings of Vitamin B12 Supplements: Nowadays Vitamin B12 deficiency has become a common problem. Due to problems like fatigue, weakness, tingling in hands and feet and hair fall, people start taking B12 supplements. But when searching at the pharmacy or online, two names often come up – methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin. Due to the influence of marketing, many people believe that methylcobalamin is the better option and only expensive products should be purchased. But is it true?
Difference between methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin
Both these forms of vitamin B12 are useful to overcome deficiency. Methylcobalamin is directly active in the body, which means the body can use it without any changes. It is considered especially beneficial in nerve problems. Cyanocobalamin, on the other hand, is a synthetic form, which is converted into the active form once taken into the body. It is very effective in treating general B12 deficiency.
According to Dr Anup Khatri, senior consultant, Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai, both forms have been used safely and effectively for decades.
Is methylcobalamin always better?
Dr. Khatri says that this is not so. Methylcobalamin is often touted as ‘better’ due to marketing, but according to medical evidence, both forms are equally effective in most cases. It is not necessary to take expensive supplements.
Which option to choose?
If there are nerve problems, diabetes, or neurological problems, the doctor may recommend methylcobalamin. Cyanocobalamin is also effective for general B12 deficiency, increasing energy or daily fatigue. Doctors take special care in case of kidney problems.
Concern about cyanide in cyanocobalamin?
Many people are afraid of cyanocobalamin because it contains the word ‘cyanide’. But according to doctors, its quantity is very less and it is not harmful to the body. It has been considered safe for decades.

In most cases, both forms normalize B12 levels with proper dosage and regular use. Most importantly, do not start taking supplements without consulting your doctor. Take supplements only after getting a blood test done as per doctor’s advice. Wrong form or wrong dosage can cause harm instead of benefit.
