What is WhatsApp username feature?
WhatsApp had announced last month that they will be rolling out the WhatsApp Username feature by the end of this year. Under this feature, each user can create a unique ID and use it as their contact number. This will keep their mobile number safe and they can contact others without sharing their mobile number. This feature is similar to the features available on Telegram and Signal. However, this has raised concerns in the government. The government fears that the username feature could be misused. Fraud can be done by creating similar usernames.
Meta v. Central Govt
The feature ran into controversy after several celebrities claimed that they could not find usernames associated with their names. In response, Meta said that they have already blocked the names of the celebrities, so that no one else can use them. However, posts appeared on social media claiming to have obtained usernames of famous names. The central government issued a notice on July 1 preventing Meta from launching this feature. The government believed that the use of usernames could allow fraudsters to hide their phone numbers and carry out activities such as phishing attacks and digital arrests.
