Shooting Outside Wilson County Courthouse

Authorities have named 21-year-old Abdul Karim Mustafa as the individual responsible for a shooting that occurred outside the Wilson County Courthouse in Wilson, North Carolina. The incident, which took place around 10:30 AM on Monday, resulted in a 19-year-old woman being critically injured and two law enforcement officers sustaining injuries.

Reports indicate that Mustafa was seated on a bench in front of the courthouse when he approached the woman entering the building and opened fire, hitting her multiple times. Following the shooting, he fled several blocks before being confronted by police, leading to an exchange of gunfire. During this confrontation, a Wilson police officer was shot in the arm, while a sheriff's deputy was struck in his protective vest. The injured officer was transported to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville and is anticipated to recover, though the condition of the deputy has not been disclosed.

Mustafa was apprehended a short distance from the shooting scene. Investigators suspect that this act was a retaliation linked to an ongoing investigation into the recent fatal shooting of a teenager in Wilson, with the injured woman being related to the suspect in that earlier case. Mustafa now faces charges of attempted first-degree murder along with several other offenses. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is collaborating with the Wilson Police Department on this case. A significant area around the courthouse remains cordoned off as investigators continue their work, but authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.
