Bayern Munich have reportedly intensified their pursuit of Barcelona defender Jules Kounde as they aim to strengthen their defensive line before the upcoming season. The Bundesliga champions are said to have made formal enquiries following the French international’s impressive performances on the global stage this summer.
Bayern submit formal enquiry
As per BILD, Bayern have joined the chase for Kounde, recently contacting the player’s representatives to explore a possible move to the Allianz Arena. The German giants are keen to understand the French defender’s current contract status and his openness to leaving Catalonia, following a somewhat inconsistent domestic campaign at Camp Nou.
Although Bayern are eager to bring him in, sources close to Kounde indicate that his current preference is to stay with the Blaugrana.
After an energising spell at the World Cup, the Frenchman is determined to compete for his place and demonstrate his value under Hansi Flick’s management. Despite Munich’s interest, no official negotiations have yet taken place between the clubs.
Barcelona’s evolving transfer outlook
Even though Kounde remains a key member of the squad, Barcelona no longer view him as completely untouchable. The club’s ongoing financial challenges mean that they are open to considering substantial offers for several players, provided those offers meet their valuation. The club’s leadership noted his inconsistency last season, sparking internal debate about his future before his standout World Cup performances changed the perception.
Last August, Barcelona moved to secure Kounde’s value by extending his contract until 2030, effectively fending off interest from Manchester City. Pep Guardiola has long been an admirer of the defender, prompting Barcelona to offer improved terms to ensure his commitment.
However, with Bayern Munich now showing strong interest, the Catalan side faces a dilemma—whether to capitalise on his rising market value or to rely on him maintaining his international form in domestic competition.
World Cup performances revive top-level attention
Kounde has been among the standout defenders at the 2026 World Cup, becoming a regular starter in Didier Deschamps’ lineup. The former Sevilla star has played most of France’s campaign so far, forming part of a solid defensive unit alongside William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano.
His ability to neutralise opposing wingers has reminded top European clubs that he remains one of the best specialists in his position.
This resurgence has been encouraging for Barcelona, especially after a club season marked by inconsistency. Although lapses in concentration occasionally hurt the team, his strong international form has boosted his estimated market value back to around €60 million.
“I have a contract with Barcelona until 2030,” Kounde recently said, reaffirming his long-term commitment to the Spanish side’s project.
Kounde set to face Barcelona teammates
Kounde is now preparing to represent France against several of his Barcelona teammates, who will line up for Spain, in the World Cup semi-final scheduled for Tuesday in Arlington, Texas.
Les Bleus will be aiming to secure another victory and reach the World Cup final for the third consecutive time, where they would meet the winner of the Argentina versus England encounter.
