New Delhi: India’s coaching staff could soon see a major change with assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate who is reportedly seeking to step away from his role. According to Cricbuzz, the former Netherlands all-rounder has informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of his intention to leave and has requested to be relieved of his duties.
If the request is approved, then the ten Doeschate’s final assignment with the Indian team could be the third and final ODI against England on 19 July. However, a final decision is still awaited with both the BCCI and head coach Gautam Gambhir yet to sign off on the request.
Ten Doeschate joined India’s support staff two years ago after Gambhir recommended him for the role. His initial contract is also understood to have come to an end around this month.
Personal reasons behind decisionAccording to the report, ten Doeschate’s decision is not linked to job dissatisfaction instead, it is believed to be driven by personal reasons with the coach wanting to spend more time with his family in London.
With three young sons at home and his wife currently working, the former cricketer is reportedly looking for a role that involves less travelling. India’s demanding international schedule has meant long periods away from home, making family time difficult.
The report also suggests that his responsibilities within the Indian setup may not have been fully defined. Although fielding is one of his strongest areas that role is already handled by fielding coach T Dilip.
Gambhir could still play a key roleDespite the request, ten Doeschate’s exit is not yet confirmed as according to Cricbuzz, Gambhir values his assistant highly and has often praised his contribution to the team behind the scenes.
The two also share a strong working relationship dating back to Gambhir’s appointment as head coach bfecause of that, there remains a possibility that Gambhir could ask him to continue with the team.
For now, the situation remains unresolved. If both the BCCI and Gambhir approve the request, India could bid farewell to one of its assistant coaches after the final ODI against England, ending what is expected to be an amicable association.
