Fenerbahce have reportedly finalised a landmark €42 million agreement with Marseille to sign forward Mason Greenwood. The former Manchester United striker is expected to pen a lucrative four-year contract in Turkey, marking a record-breaking outgoing transfer for the French club.

Turkish heavyweights clinch the winger

As per reports from Foot Mercato, Fenerbahce have triumphed in the race to land Greenwood after agreeing on a total transfer package valued at €42m (£35.6m) with Marseille. The deal includes a guaranteed €40m payment along with €2m in performance-related bonuses. Although Marseille had received financially superior offers from both Atletico Madrid and Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, the English winger favoured a move to the Turkish Super Lig instead.

Record-breaking departure for Marseille

Greenwood’s exit marks a significant transaction for Marseille, where he was under contract until June 2029. Due to a stringent cost-control policy enforced by the club’s management, Marseille were compelled to sell one of their most valuable players to balance their finances. The transfer surpasses Marseille’s previous record sale, which stood at €39m when Michy Batshuayi joined Chelsea back in 2016.

Greenwood secures major contract

During his two-year stint in Ligue 1, Greenwood delivered an impressive record, netting 48 goals and providing 17 assists across 81 competitive matches. His prolific performances persuaded Fenerbahce to invest heavily in acquiring his services on a four-year deal. The 22-year-old is set to earn approximately €10m (£8.5m) per season in Istanbul, reflecting his elevated status within European football.

Fenerbahce aim for title success

Greenwood’s arrival is part of a comprehensive squad rebuild led by Fenerbahce head coach Ismail Kartal as the club prepares for a rigorous domestic and continental campaign. He is expected to slot in seamlessly alongside other marquee signings such as Nathan Ake and Vedat Muriqi, enhancing the team’s depth and attacking options. The English forward will face immediate pressure to sustain his form as Fenerbahce target the Super Lig crown, aiming to end the four-year title streak of their fierce Istanbul rivals Galatasaray.
