Arguably England’s greatest white-ball batsman, Jos Buttler became only the second Englishman to feature in 200 ODI matches for the Three Lions in the 1st ODI against India.
The IND vs ENG three-match ODI series kicked off on Tuesday at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
In the T20I series, England handed a thumping to India, whitewashing the visitors by 4-0. However, there are several changes in the personnel for India from their T20I squad to the ODI lineup that took the field.
Apart from skipper Shubman Gill, India fielded a significantly experienced ODI side compared to the one that played the T20Is, with Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah all adding great strength to the Asian unit.
In the absence of the injured Harshit Rana, Shivam Dube made his return to the ODI XI after almost two years. Dube is the pace-bowling all-rounder today, while Washington Sundar and Axar Patel are the spin-bowling all-rounders. Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna formed a pace trio with Bumrah, with Arshdeep Singh excluded.
Ishan Kishan was benched as India retained Shreyas Iyer in the side. Another interesting exclusion was Kuldeep Yadav. It’s not clear whether Kuldeep is not picked owing to the combination – had Harshit been available, Kuldeep would have likely played instead of Gurnoor or Prasidh, with Dube/Sundar dropping out – or because of his lack of form in recent times.
For England, this series marked the trial of Jacob Bethell as an opener in the ODI format. Josh Tongue is now a three-format player, earning his awaited ODI cap.
IND vs ENG: Jos Buttler receives 200th ODI cap from Eoin Morgan
An emotional moment occurred prior to the start of play today as Buttler received his 200th ODI cap from former captain Eoin Morgan. Both of them were integral to England lifting their maiden ODI World Cup trophy in 2019 at Lord’s. Buttler had removed the bails for Martin Guptill’s run-out on the last ball of the Super Over after the final had been tied, with England winning the final on boundary count.
Buttler is only the second player to play 200 ODIs for England. Incidentally, the man who handed him his cap today, Morgan, is the first and only one ahead of Buttler on this list.
Paul Collingwood, James Anderson, and Joe Root are behind them, with Root only 10 games away from 200 ODI matches.
Top 5 England cricketers to play most ODI matches
- John Morgan – 225
- Jos Buttler – 200*
- Paul Collingwood – 197
- James Anderson – 194
- Joe Root – 190*

Meanwhile, Buttler had a forgettable outing in the IND vs ENG 1st ODI as he managed only 5 runs off 14 balls and was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna in what were bowling-friendly conditions. This makes Brook’s decision to bat first after winning the toss questionable, with England struggling at 117/6 after 25 overs.
